A disturbing series of killings in rural Utah has left three women dead and a 23-year-old man in custody after authorities say he carried out a violent crime spree across the county. Investigators believe the suspect targeted the victims in order to steal their vehicles before fleeing across state lines.
Suspect Arrested After Triple Killing in Utah
Ivan Miller, 23, was arrested after authorities connected him to the deaths of three women in Wayne County, Utah. Law enforcement officials say the suspect was captured in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, following a multi-state search.
Initially, Miller was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed handgun and knife, according to the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office. After further investigation, prosecutors later filed three counts of aggravated murder.
Authorities say the crimes happened on Wednesday at two different locations — a private home in the small town of Lyman and a hiking trail near Capitol Reef National Park.

Victims Found at Home and Hiking Trail
Officials said the victims included:
- A woman in her 80s found dead in her home in Lyman
- A woman in her 30s
- A woman in her 60s
The two younger victims were discovered along a hiking trail near Capitol Reef National Park, about 15 miles south of Lyman near the town of Torrey.
Authorities said the names of the victims have not yet been released.
Investigators believe the suspect first entered the elderly woman’s home, killed her, and then stole her car.
He allegedly then drove that vehicle to a nearby trailhead where he encountered the other two women.
Victims Likely Targeted for Their Vehicles
During a press conference, officials said investigators believe the killings were not personal.
According to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden, the suspect appeared to target the victims simply to steal their vehicles.
Authorities said there is currently no evidence the victims were specifically targeted, other than being convenient opportunities.
After killing the two women near the hiking trail, Miller allegedly stole their vehicle and fled the area.
Bodies Discovered After Missing Hikers Reported
The two hikers were reported missing when they failed to return home.
Around 4:30 p.m., their husbands began searching for them and eventually contacted police.
Investigators quickly located their bodies near the trail. While processing the scene, officers found a vehicle belonging to the elderly victim parked nearby.
That discovery led them back to the victim’s home, where her body was found.
Multi-State Manhunt Leads to Arrest
Authorities quickly launched a large search operation involving multiple agencies.
Using license plate reader cameras and vehicle tracking technology, investigators traced the stolen vehicle’s movements across several states:
- Southern Utah
- Northern Arizona
- Southern Colorado
Around 11:10 p.m. Wednesday, police in Pagosa Springs were alerted that the stolen car had entered their area.
Officers later located the vehicle abandoned in Centennial Park in downtown Pagosa Springs.
A few hours later, Miller was found and taken into custody.
Weapons Found During Arrest
Police said that when officers detained Miller, they discovered he was carrying:
- A concealed handgun
- A large knife
Those weapons led to the initial arrest for concealed weapon violations.
However, investigators later connected him to the killings in Utah.
Suspect Allegedly Confessed to Killings
According to court documents, Miller later confessed during an interview with investigators.
Authorities say he admitted using a handgun and knife during the attacks.
Prosecutors allege the victims were shot with .45-caliber bullets, and one victim was also stabbed multiple times in the heart.
Investigators also reported finding 20-gauge shotgun shells at both crime scenes, though Miller claimed he only used a handgun and knife.
During questioning, Miller reportedly told investigators he committed the killings because he “needed the money.”
Court documents also revealed he allegedly told investigators the killings “had to be done,” even though he said he did not like doing it.
Community Shocked by Violence
The killings have deeply shaken the small communities in Wayne County.
Torrey Mayor Mickey Wright issued a statement expressing condolences to the victims’ families and describing the incident as heartbreaking for the tight-knit community.
Officials say investigations at both crime scenes are still ongoing.
Authorities are now preparing the legal process to extradite Miller to Utah, where he will face the aggravated murder charges.
