Hunter Metcalf walked across the graduation stage at the Ford Center on May 21 to receive his own diploma before returning moments later to accept a posthumous diploma for his brother Austin.

Austin Metcalf Was Killed at Track Meet
Austin Metcalf died after being stabbed during a high school track and field event at Kuykendall Stadium in April 2025.
Authorities accused fellow student Karmelo Anthony of fatally stabbing the 17-year-old during an altercation inside a tent area at the meet.
According to witness statements included in court records, the confrontation allegedly began after Austin asked Anthony to move from a tent.
Police said the argument escalated before Austin was stabbed in the chest.
Austin later died from his injuries after being transported to the hospital.
Murder Trial Scheduled to Begin Soon
Karmelo Anthony was later indicted on a first-degree murder charge and is being tried as an adult.
The trial is expected to begin on June 1.
According to reports, Anthony allegedly told officers after the incident that he “did it,” but also claimed he acted in self-defense.
His attorney has continued to argue that the stabbing was an act of self-protection.
Graduation Ceremony Marked by Emotion
Due to a gag order connected to the ongoing case, Hunter Metcalf and other family members reportedly did not speak publicly during the graduation ceremony.
Still, the tribute deeply affected many people in attendance.
The emotional scene highlighted the lasting impact Austin’s death has had on his family, classmates, and local community.
Many students and parents reportedly stood in silence before applauding Hunter’s gesture.
Case Drew National Attention
The fatal stabbing sparked national headlines and intense public debate after the incident occurred during a school sporting event.
Questions surrounding school safety, youth violence, and self-defense claims quickly became major topics online.
The case also gained attention after discussions surrounding Anthony’s graduation eligibility while awaiting trial.
Although he was reportedly barred from senior activities, he later received his diploma after meeting academic requirements.
