President Donald Trump has stepped up his criticism of previous spending on infrastructure, focusing on the costly renovation of the National Mall Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. He claims past efforts were mismanaged and promises a faster, cheaper rebuild just before Independence Day.
Reflecting Pool Repair Cost Controversy
On Saturday, Trump posted on Truth Social about the ongoing repairs to the Reflecting Pool, located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.
He said that previous renovation projects under Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden were extremely expensive. According to Trump, “Obama and Biden spent more than 100 million dollars trying to fix it. The estimated cost of their ‘fix up’ was 355 million dollars.” He also criticized the results, claiming, “They made it worse.”
Trump said he is now personally overseeing a “higher-grade reconstruction,” using what he calls “industrial-strength materials” to make the pool more durable and visually appealing while cutting costs. He added that the project is “ahead of schedule” and aims to be finished before July 4.
Trump Reflecting Pool Contract
Trump clarified that he is not personally connected to the contractor handling the project. The $13.1 million no-bid contract was awarded by the Interior Department.
The renovation plan, which includes repainting the pool, has faced criticism over rising costs. The work is planned to finish before the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations.
Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) criticized the project, saying Trump is directing taxpayer money toward preferred contractors. Schiff linked the project to wider concerns about government waste and unfulfilled promises on public works.
Private Donations and Renovation Support
Separately, Emilie Choi, an executive at Coinbase Global Inc.(NASDAQ:COIN), said the company donated to Trump’s ballroom project partly to maintain “good relations” with the White House. She noted that private contributions help fund federal-area renovations managed through a nonprofit.
The National Mall Reflecting Pool renovation has become a high-profile example of infrastructure spending under scrutiny. Trump’s promise of a faster, cheaper, and more durable rebuild highlights tensions between past administrations’ projects and current plans.
While private donations are helping, critics remain cautious about potential taxpayer money misuse. With the July 4 deadline approaching, all eyes are on whether the pool will meet the schedule and public expectations. This project underscores the importance of careful planning, accountability, and transparency in managing national monuments and public works.
