Three people have been charged with murder nearly a week after a man’s body was discovered inside a trash can in Coventry, England. The victim, identified as 37-year-old Thomas Niven, was found by a member of the public on March 13.
Discovery of the Body
The body was found at around 5 pm on March 13 in a Coventry City Council trash bin. Police suspect that the victim was struck by a vehicle before being moved to a park. A large team of detectives and forensic specialists were quickly assembled to investigate the case.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Poole, who is leading the investigation, commented, “We have a large team of detectives, forensic specialists, and other staff working around the clock to establish what has happened to this man, who he is, and who is responsible.”
Investigation and Appeal
Following the discovery, West Midlands Police made a public appeal for information. The response led to the identification of the victim and the arrest of three suspects. Police also revealed that they received several key pieces of information from the public, which helped advance the investigation.
Identification of the Victim
On March 17, the victim was formally identified as 37-year-old Thomas Niven, known as Tom. His family described him as “a pillar of strength towards us all.” In a statement, they shared fond memories of him, saying, “He was loving and caring, he loved all of his family, he was a big softy when it came to animals and his nephews and nieces. He was full of laughter and had such a vibe for life.”
Arrests and Charges
On March 16, three individuals were arrested in connection with the murder. The suspects have been identified as 45-year-old Tammy Sturdy, 21-year-old Camron Sturdy, and 37-year-old Shane Turkington, all from Coventry. They were charged with murder and remanded in custody. They are set to appear at Coventry Magistrates’ Court on March 19.
Family’s Tribute to Tom Niven
In their tribute, Niven’s family fondly remembered him as someone who “loved small harmless pranks but could never keep a straight face.” They expressed how proud they were to have had him in their lives and how deeply they would miss him. His tragic death has left his family and friends devastated.
