In a shocking incident in Oklahoma City, a father was alarmed when his 11-year-old son woke him up to report a stranger sleeping in his bedroom. The encounter, which quickly escalated, has led to concerns over safety, as well as frustration with the legal system.
A Startling Discovery
Josh Hodnik, the father, was initially skeptical when his son woke him up early in the morning, claiming there was a man in his bed. “At 8 a.m., maybe, my son woke me up, and he said, ‘There’s a man in my bed,'” Hodnik recalled. The father, unsure at first, was soon confronted with a real and alarming situation.
“I was like, ‘Are you sure? Are you sure?’ He said, ‘Yeah, there’s a man,'” Hodnik explained. His initial doubts quickly faded when the situation became undeniable.
Police Report and the Stranger’s Claim
According to an Oklahoma City police report, the suspect, described as a transient, was found in the child’s bedroom. The man allegedly claimed that an unknown woman had told him he could spend the night at the house. However, Hodnik clarified that only he and his children lived in the home, emphasizing that the doors had been left unlocked after his children had been playing the night before.
“It was left unlocked because my kids were playing the night before, and didn’t lock it, but that’s not an excuse for someone to walk in,” Hodnik said. He stressed that while the door may have been left open, it should never have led to such a situation.
Father’s Concern and Response
Hodnik expressed deep concern for the safety of his children during the incident. “I did something violent to him where he couldn’t react, but you know, he could have done something to my child while he was asleep, or my daughter while she was asleep,” Hodnik said.
After realizing the gravity of the situation, the father physically escorted the suspect to the living room, where he punched him. Despite the altercation, the suspect was eventually taken into custody without further incident. Thankfully, none of Hodnik’s children were harmed during the encounter.
Legal Background and Frustration with the System
The suspect had previously participated in Mental Health Court, now known as DREAMS Court, in Oklahoma County, where individuals are given the chance to receive treatment in lieu of traditional prosecution. According to the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office, the suspect had pleaded into the program in an attempt to receive mental health support.
However, after the allegations arose, the office stated they would evaluate his future participation in the program, as committing a crime while in treatment court could result in a revocation of his participation.
Hodnik expressed frustration with the system, blaming politicians and judges for what he sees as inadequate oversight. “These politicians and these judges and all these people need to be held accountable. That’s what needs to happen,” the father said.
This unsettling incident highlights the risks that parents and children face, even in the comfort of their own homes. While no harm came to the children, the situation has sparked larger questions about safety, accountability, and the handling of individuals in treatment programs. The suspect is currently being held at the Cleveland County Jail, awaiting further legal proceedings.
