A disturbing case in Oklahoma has raised serious concerns about elder care and neglect after police discovered an elderly woman dead inside a home filled with trash and rodents. Body camera footage released by authorities shows the conditions inside the house where the woman was found. The woman’s son, who had been acting as her caretaker for several years, has now been arrested and charged in connection with her death. Investigators say the case is still developing as additional allegations are being examined.
Elderly Woman Found Dead Inside Del City Home
Police in Del City, Oklahoma, discovered the body of an elderly woman named Deborah Valentine inside a house earlier this year. Authorities said the home was in extremely poor condition when officers arrived.
The woman’s son, Duane Valentine, was arrested after the discovery. He is now facing charges that include second-degree murder and abuse by a caretaker.
Police originally reported the case in February, but body camera footage has now been released showing the moments officers entered the home.
The footage released publicly lasts about two minutes, although the full recording is reportedly more than an hour long.
Son Told Police He Had Been His Mother’s Caretaker
According to police reports, 52-year-old Duane Valentine told officers he had been caring for his mother for about nine years.
He claimed that Deborah Valentine had been sick in the days before she was found dead.
When speaking with officers, Duane said he had checked on her regularly.
He told police:
- He checked on his mother a few times each day
- She had been breathing and appeared fine earlier
- He allowed her to rest because she had been feeling ill
Duane told officers that when he finally checked on her again, she did not respond.
Officers Found Disturbing Conditions Inside the Home
When police entered the bedroom, they found Deborah Valentine lying in her bed.
Officers described extremely unsanitary conditions inside the house.
According to police observations:
- There were about two feet of trash inside the room
- Rodents were present inside the home
- The bedroom appeared heavily cluttered
One officer said Deborah appeared to have been dead for several days.
In the body camera footage, an officer can be heard describing the scene to another officer and noting that a mouse had been seen on the victim’s face.
Investigators also reported that other areas of the house, including the kitchen, were in poor condition and filled with clutter.
Family Members Questioned the Son
After police arrived, other family members came to the home.
During the body camera footage, relatives can be heard asking Duane why he had not contacted them sooner.
Duane responded by saying he did not realize his mother had died.
He reportedly told family members that he believed she had simply been sleeping due to illness.
Police Questioned Duane Valentine
Authorities later took Duane Valentine to the police station for questioning.
During the conversation with officers, he asked whether he needed a lawyer.
He also denied killing his mother and maintained that she had simply been ill.
According to investigators, Deborah Valentine may have been dead for several days before she was discovered.
Charges Filed Against the Son
Duane Valentine has been charged with:
| Charge | Description |
|---|---|
| Second-degree murder | Related to the death of Deborah Valentine |
| Abuse by a caretaker | Allegedly failing to properly care for the victim |
He has since been released on bond while the case proceeds through the legal system.
As part of the bond conditions, he is required to wear a GPS monitor.

Authorities say the investigation is not yet complete.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has confirmed it is assisting with a separate investigation into possible financial abuse connected to the case.
Officials have not yet released further details about the financial allegations.
Investigators continue to review evidence to determine the full circumstances surrounding Deborah Valentine’s death.
