A shocking murder case from New York has finally reached a major turning point after several years. A man who brutally attacked another person and left him fighting for life has now been found guilty by a jury. The case highlights not only the severity of the crime but also the long suffering faced by the victim before his death.
Details of the brutal attack
Dennis “Midnight” Ray, aged 64, has been convicted of second-degree murder, assault, and two counts of robbery. The incident happened on the night of April 22, 2022, in Hempstead, New York.
Ray, along with his accomplice Tyrell Guthrie, attacked 59-year-old Jose Osma behind a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant. According to officials, the two men robbed Osma and beat him very badly. The attack was so violent that Osma was left close to death at the scene.
Victim found unconscious
The next morning, around 6:30 a.m., a passerby found Osma lying unconscious. He was immediately taken to a hospital. At that time, he had no identification on him, so doctors treated him as an unknown person.
Osma had suffered serious injuries, including multiple fractures to his skull and face. His condition was critical from the beginning.
Identification and medical struggle
Osma’s family reported him missing on the same day he was admitted to the hospital. After two days, on April 24, 2022, he was finally identified.
What followed was a long and painful journey. Osma had to go through multiple brain surgeries and suffered from paralysis. He spent months in hospitals and rehabilitation centres. His health never fully recovered.
After nearly a year of continuous treatment and suffering, Osma sadly passed away on April 30, 2023, due to the severe injuries caused by the attack.
Arrest of the accused
Tyrell Guthrie was caught by the police the very next day after the attack. He was found near the crime scene with blood on his clothes. He was also carrying Ray’s jacket, which had the victim’s blood on it.
Dennis Ray was arrested later on May 7, 2022.
Authorities revealed that Ray showed no regret for his actions. In fact, he reportedly bragged about the robbery and the violent act shortly after committing the crime.
Court verdict and sentencing
Guthrie admitted his role in the crime and pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter on November 9, 2023. In January 2024, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Ray, however, chose to go to trial. After hearing all the evidence, the jury found him guilty on multiple charges. He is now scheduled to be sentenced on May 12.
He could face a punishment ranging from 25 years to life in prison.
