A judge in Los Angeles has paused the criminal case against a Florida woman accused of opening fire at the home of singer Rihanna and rapper A$AP Rocky while they and their children were inside.
The defendant, 35-year-old Ivanna Lisette Ortiz of Orlando, faces attempted murder charges and several other felony counts. She has pleaded not guilty.
During a private court meeting on Tuesday, Ortiz’s attorney, Deputy Public Defender Derek Dillman, raised concerns about her mental competency.
As a result, Judge Shannon K. Cooley ordered psychiatric evaluations and temporarily transferred the case to a specialized Hollywood mental health court.
The court will now determine whether Ortiz is mentally competent to understand the legal proceedings and assist in her own defense.
According to her lawyer, protecting Ortiz’s legal rights requires ensuring she can participate rationally in her defense.
If Ortiz is ultimately found mentally incompetent, she could be held in a state psychiatric hospital until doctors determine she is fit to stand trial.
Here is a breakdown of the allegations:
| Charges Against Ortiz | Details |
|---|---|
| Attempted murder | Related to shooting at Rihanna’s property |
| Assault with semiautomatic firearm | 10 counts |
| Shooting at occupied dwelling/vehicle | 3 counts |
| Bail amount | Nearly $2 million |
Authorities allege that on March 8, Ortiz drove a Tesla to the couple’s Beverly Hills-area property and fired at least 20 rounds from an AR-15-style rifle toward the home and a neighboring property.
Police said:
- Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, and their children were home at the time
- No one was physically injured
- Bullets struck an Airstream trailer where the couple was located
- Bullet holes were found near a second-floor nursery where the children and nanny were present
Investigators reported that after her arrest, Ortiz allegedly told police:
“I wasn’t attempting murder.”
Officials have not publicly discussed a possible motive or any known relationship between Ortiz and the celebrity couple.
Court records show Ortiz previously worked as a licensed speech pathologist and had no prior criminal history.
Ortiz is scheduled to return to court on June 2.
