A brave act by a teenager in Kentucky is getting widespread attention after he stepped in to protect a woman and her young daughter from an alleged attacker. Even though he was seriously injured, many people are calling him a true hero for his quick and selfless action.
What Happened That Night
The incident took place in Louisville during the popular Thunder Over Louisville celebration. A mother, Kristyn Stasel, was heading back to her car with her 12-year-old daughter after watching the fireworks.
As they were walking, a man later identified as Vasilis Sakellaridis allegedly approached them and made an inappropriate and disturbing comment. When the mother told him her daughter was only 12, he reportedly responded in a shocking and offensive way.
Feeling threatened, the mother began shouting loudly to attract attention and warn others. Instead of backing off, the man allegedly became aggressive and moved toward them.
Teen Steps In to Help
At that moment, a group of teenagers nearby heard the woman’s cries. One of them, 15-year-old Da’Jon Hayes-Burr, immediately stepped forward to help.
According to reports, the suspect tried to attack the group, but the teens managed to push him to the ground. The situation seemed under control for a moment, but things quickly turned dangerous again.
The Stabbing Incident
As the mother and her daughter tried to move away, the suspect came back. This time, he allegedly had a weapon and stabbed Da’Jon in the stomach.
Even after the attack, the suspect continued moving toward the woman and her child. Thankfully, several police officers and military personnel who were present at the event quickly stepped in. It reportedly took around a dozen officers to restrain and arrest him.
Condition of the Teen
Da’Jon was rushed for medical treatment. While his injuries are serious, he is expected to recover. However, his healing process may take time, both physically and emotionally.
The woman he helped has publicly thanked him, calling him a hero. She said his actions likely prevented something much worse from happening.
Charges Against the Suspect
The accused, Sakellaridis, is facing multiple charges, including:
- First-degree assault
- Fleeing or evading police
- Disorderly conduct
- Public intoxication
He has pleaded not guilty and is currently being held on a $25,000 cash bond.
