A disturbing case from Australia has revealed new details about an alleged attempted plane hijacking involving a teenager accused of bringing weapons onto an airport runway. Authorities say the teen allegedly planned the incident for months and later admitted he wanted to “hurt people.”
The suspect, who cannot legally be identified because he was 17 at the time of the alleged offense, is now facing multiple serious charges that could potentially lead to life in prison if he is convicted.
Teen Accused of Attempted Plane Hijacking
According to court documents, the teenager allegedly entered Avalon Airport near Melbourne in March 2025 and attempted to board a Jetstar flight headed to Sydney.
Authorities claim the teen secretly entered the airport area after cutting through a fence using wire cutters.
Investigators allege he was carrying several dangerous weapons and equipment at the time.
Teen Allegedly Disguised Himself as Airport Worker
Court records reportedly state the suspect wore high-visibility clothing and carried tool bags, making him appear similar to an airport engineer or maintenance worker.
Witnesses allegedly believed he was authorized to be near the aircraft because of the disguise.
Security footage reportedly showed the teen walking across the airport tarmac toward the aircraft while passengers boarded from the rear of the plane.
Crew Became Suspicious During Boarding
According to prosecutors, airline staff stopped the teen and asked to see his boarding pass.
The teen allegedly responded by quietly telling crew members he had “bombs in his bags.”
Authorities say he also demanded access to the cockpit and told staff to remain calm.
As the situation escalated, investigators claim the teen attempted to assemble a shotgun from separate parts hidden under his clothing.
Passengers and Staff Restrained Suspect
Before the teen could allegedly complete the weapon assembly, a bystander reportedly tackled him and grabbed the barrel of the firearm.
Crew members and others then helped restrain the suspect using flexicuffs.
The quick actions of passengers and airline staff may have prevented a major tragedy involving the aircraft’s 173 passengers.
Teen Allegedly Said He Wanted to ‘Hurt People’
According to court documents, the suspect later admitted he had planned the hijacking for months.
Witnesses allegedly heard him say:
“Some things need to be done.”
Authorities also claim he admitted his goal was to “hurt people.”
The statements have shocked many people following the case.
Weapons and Explosive Materials Allegedly Found
Investigators say the teen carried multiple dangerous items, including:
- A shotgun separated into parts
- Shotgun ammunition
- Multiple knives
- Tool belts and cutting equipment
- A lighter and possible fire-starting materials
Court records also reportedly mention suspected Molotov cocktails and what appeared to be an improvised explosive device.
Police later allegedly discovered a rifle with a telescopic sight and silencer inside the suspect’s parked vehicle near the airport.
Online Searches and Planning Under Investigation
According to prosecutors, investigators found evidence suggesting the teen researched airports and aircraft incidents online before the alleged attack.
Authorities also claim handwritten notes were recovered that referenced weapons preparation and explosives.
Court documents further allege the teen had recently distanced himself from longtime friends and connected with a new group that had “shown him the way.”
Teen Faces Multiple Serious Charges
The suspect is now facing several major criminal charges, including:
- Attempted hijacking
- Attempting to take control of an aircraft
- Possessing firearms and prohibited weapons
- Assaulting airline crew
- Endangering aircraft safety with intent to kill
If convicted, he could potentially face life imprisonment.
Defense May Pursue Mental Impairment Argument
According to reports, defense lawyers have argued the case should remain in children’s court despite the seriousness of the allegations.
The defense has also indicated it may pursue a mental impairment defense during future proceedings.
Meanwhile, prosecutors are reportedly pushing for the matter to be transferred to a higher court because of the extreme severity of the alleged crimes.
