A disturbing case in Oklahoma has led to serious criminal charges after authorities say a man neglected his elderly mother in conditions so severe that it may have led to her death. Investigators say the woman was found in a home filled with trash, rodents, and human waste.
The case has shocked the local community and raised questions about caretaker responsibility and elder abuse.
Oklahoma Man Accused in Mother’s Death
Authorities in Del City, Oklahoma, have charged 52-year-old Duane Valentine with second-degree murder and caretaker abuse following the death of his mother.
Police say Valentine contacted authorities on February 17 after finding his mother, 70-year-old Deborah Valentine, unresponsive in her bedroom.
When officers from the Del City Police Department arrived at the home, they discovered what investigators described as extremely unsanitary and dangerous living conditions.
Officers Discover Disturbing Conditions Inside Home
Body camera footage from the scene shows officers walking through a home filled with trash and debris.
According to police reports, the house was covered in piles of garbage from floor to ceiling. Officers also reported seeing rats throughout the home and signs of human waste on several items.
Deborah Valentine was reportedly found lying in a bed that was surrounded by approximately two feet of trash.
Investigators said rodents were present around the body when officers entered the room.
The shocking discovery led officers to question whether the woman had died earlier than initially reported.
Son’s Account of Events
According to investigators, Duane Valentine told officers that he last spoke with his mother about three days before calling authorities.
He said he checked on her the following day and believed she was simply sleeping. When he returned later, she was unresponsive.
Valentine reportedly told police that he had been living in the home with his mother for the past nine years and served as her caretaker.
He also claimed that Deborah Valentine had become bedridden two to three months before her death and had been sick shortly before he discovered her unresponsive.
Family Members Question the Situation
After officers arrived at the home, other family members came to the scene.
According to police reports, relatives asked Duane Valentine why he had not contacted them earlier about their mother’s condition.
He allegedly responded that he did not realize she had passed away.
Investigators say the conditions in the home and the timeline provided by Valentine raised serious concerns during the investigation.
Charges Filed Against Duane Valentine
Following the investigation, authorities charged Valentine with:
- Second-degree murder
- Abuse by a caretaker
Investigators believe the living conditions and lack of proper care may have contributed to Deborah Valentine’s death.
The Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation is also reviewing possible financial abuse allegations related to the case.
Suspect Released on Bond
After his arrest, Duane Valentine was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center.
He was later released after posting a $50,000 bond.
Authorities confirmed that Valentine is currently not in custody but must wear a GPS monitoring device as part of the conditions of his release.
Court Hearing Scheduled
Valentine is scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment on March 19.
During the hearing, the charges against him will be formally addressed, and the case will begin moving through the legal process.
