A disturbing case from New York has come to light where a man is accused of brutally attacking his own elderly mother during an argument. The shocking details shared by prosecutors have left people deeply concerned about rising cases of domestic violence, especially involving senior citizens.
What Happened in the Incident
According to the Nassau County Police Department, the incident took place on April 1 in Williston Park, a neighbourhood in Long Island. A 75-year-old woman reported that she was attacked by her 37-year-old son, John Strano, inside their home.
Police said the situation began as an argument, but it quickly turned violent. The accused allegedly pushed his mother to the ground and slammed her head against the floor.
Brutal Assault Details Revealed
Authorities revealed disturbing details about the attack. Strano allegedly punched his mother multiple times and used a metal object — later identified as a clamp — to strike her.
Prosecutors stated that he hit her on the back of the head more than 30 times. During the assault, he also allegedly choked her, making it difficult for her to breathe.
In a shocking claim, prosecutors said Strano yelled at his mother, “Why aren’t you dying?” and “Why are you still breathing?” during the attack.
Victim’s Condition
The elderly woman suffered serious injuries in the assault. Reports say she had:
- Severe swelling on her face and head
- Deep cuts and wounds
- Loss of consciousness at one point
She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where she is currently in stable condition.
Arrest of the Suspect
After the incident, Strano fled the scene. Police later found him more than a mile away at a local elementary school. He was arrested on a baseball field after school hours without any resistance.
Authorities took him into custody and also sent him to a hospital for medical evaluation.
Charges Filed Against the Accused
John Strano is now facing multiple serious charges, including:
- Attempted second-degree murder
- Two counts of second-degree assault
- Criminal obstruction of breathing
- Criminal possession of a weapon
He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is currently being held as the case moves forward in court.
Concerns Over Elder Abuse
This case has once again highlighted the issue of elder abuse, which often goes unnoticed or unreported. Violence against elderly family members is a serious problem that needs more attention and awareness.
Such incidents show how quickly arguments can turn dangerous and why it is important to recognise warning signs early.
