Prosecutors say that a daycare owner accused of fraud attempted to leave the United States after closing the facility

Federal prosecutors have unsealed charges against a Minnesota daycare owner accused of defrauding the government while trying to flee the country. The case involves allegations that the daycare, Future Leaders Early Learning, misused taxpayer funds intended to feed children during the pandemic.

Charges Against Fahima Mahamud

The daycare’s owner, Fahima Mahamud, faces one count of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States through Minnesota’s Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). Mahamud is currently under house arrest.

Prosecutors allege that her center submitted false invoices, claiming to serve children meals while pocketing much of the reimbursement money.

Alleged Fraud Scheme

Between January and July 2021, Future Leaders Early Learning received over $850,000 in Federal Child Nutrition Program funds from Feeding Our Future, a nonprofit involved in a larger $250 million fraud scandal. Investigators say only a fraction of this money was actually used to purchase food for children.

Court documents allege that in 2020 and 2021, Mahamud submitted receipts claiming to serve two meals per day to 1,000 children, seven days a week. From 2022 to 2025, she reportedly filed roughly 13,000 claims totaling $4.6 million through CCAP, allegedly failing to collect required co-payments.

The daycare once claimed to serve 60,000 children per month, according to federal prosecutors.

Regulatory Issues and Closure

In late 2025, state license investigators visited the center and issued citations for unclean facilities and incomplete immunization records.

In February 2026, Mahamud notified the state that the daycare would close. Prosecutors claim she booked a flight to London the same day.

The center had also gained attention online, featuring in a viral video by conservative YouTuber Nick Shirley, who visited ten Minneapolis daycares in December 2025.

Broader Federal Investigation

The daycare fraud case is part of a larger crackdown on Feeding Our Future, which has already resulted in nearly 100 people being charged. In April 2026, federal agents raided at least 20 Minnesota daycares and autism centers as part of the investigation.

The Justice Department announced a major law enforcement action in Minnesota, with a press conference scheduled to include acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The case against Fahima Mahamud highlights the ongoing federal effort to uncover pandemic-era fraud in childcare programs. The allegations suggest millions of dollars intended for children’s meals were diverted for personal gain, demonstrating the need for stringent oversight of nonprofit and childcare funding programs.
