It hasn’t been a typical season for the Oklahoma Sooners on the softball field. Losing to Long Beach State early, dropping several games, and even falling to Georgia in the SEC Tournament made fans and analysts wonder if the glory days of Oklahoma softball were over.
Sooners Showing Signs of a Comeback
But for anyone thinking the Sooners’ dominance is gone, think again. Oklahoma is finding its groove. In the Norman Regional, the team outscored every opponent 28-1. The only blemish was a solo home run, making what could have been a perfect weekend almost spotless.
The offense was strong, but head coach Patty Gasso said what really stood out was the pitching staff. “It’s not about the pitches—they have quality pitches,” Gasso said. “It’s the mindset. If maybe I threw a great pitch and someone hit it out, it’s still a great pitch. That change in mindset is what’s different now. Audrey [Lowry] has led them to understand that.”
The Mindset Shift in Oklahoma Pitching
Despite a season with more lows than usual, the Sooners are peaking at the right time. Allowing just one run in three games against some of the best teams in college softball is a huge achievement.
Sophomore pitcher Audrey Lowry has been a key part of this transformation. She will start Oklahoma’s first game against Mississippi State in the Super Regionals, a major honour.
Lowry gave up the only run during the Regional weekend but still pitched 4.2 innings in the Regional Championship against Michigan with three strikeouts. She has been exceptional this season, with 120.2 innings pitched, a 2.61 ERA, and 88 strikeouts.
Looking Ahead: Super Regionals
Facing an SEC team they haven’t played this season, the Sooners will rely heavily on their pitching staff. While the offence has been strong, elite pitching will be crucial if Oklahoma wants to secure a place in the Women’s College World Series.
The Sooners may have stumbled earlier, but they’re showing the grit, skill, and mindset that made them champions. If they maintain their focus, this team could be back in the spotlight where it belongs.
