The family of a University of Oklahoma rugby player who died after suffering a serious head injury during a night out is preparing to file a civil lawsuit. They believe delays in medical help and the actions of several people and businesses played a role in his death.
The case focuses on the final hours of 23-year-old Jozsef Pal, whose death in March 2025 has raised questions about what happened that night and whether faster action could have saved his life.
Background of the Case
Jozsef Pal, a 23-year-old rugby player at the University of Oklahoma, died after sustaining a traumatic brain injury during an incident near the university campus. According to court documents filed on March 2 in Cleveland County, the family is now seeking legal action to better understand the circumstances surrounding his death.
The lawsuit aims to investigate the actions of individuals and businesses that interacted with Pal during the hours before he was injured. His family hopes the legal process will provide clarity and accountability.
Family Seeks Answers Through Civil Lawsuit
Attorneys representing the Pal family say the case is about uncovering the truth and determining whether delays in medical assistance contributed to his death.
According to attorney Chloe Glass, the family believes there were “preventable delays in obtaining medical assistance” after Pal became visibly distressed.
Through the lawsuit, the family is asking for:
- Sworn testimony from individuals involved
- Production of relevant evidence
- A detailed review of decisions made that night
The family says their goal is simple: transparency, accountability, and answers about what happened.
Night Out After a Rugby Match
According to the legal filing, Pal went out with teammates on March 1, 2025, after playing in a rugby match earlier that day.
During the evening, he reportedly visited several businesses in the Campus Corner entertainment district near the University of Oklahoma.
The petition states that:
| Time | Location | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Around 11 p.m. | Logie’s bar | Pal arrived and consumed alcohol |
| Later in the night | The Porch | Continued socialising and drinking |
| After that | Sideline | Allegedly continued drinking |
The filing claims Pal appeared intoxicated at Logie’s and was eventually asked to leave by staff. After leaving, he reportedly visited two more establishments where he allegedly continued drinking.
The lawsuit argues that his level of intoxication should have been noticeable to staff members.
Altercation Near Campus Parking Lot
The incident that led to Pal’s fatal injury reportedly happened around 3 a.m. on March 2.
According to the petition, Pal approached a parked Ford F-250 pickup truck in a parking lot locally known as the “Revvy lot.” He allegedly pulled on the locked rear passenger door handle.
Three men who were inside the truck then got out and pushed him away from the vehicle.
The lawsuit claims that one of the men struck Pal in the head. The filing states that the man later told police, “I overreacted, and I hit him.”
After being hit, Pal reportedly fell backward and hit his head on the concrete.
Claims of Delayed Emergency Response
The court petition states that Pal lost consciousness immediately after the fall and never regained meaningful consciousness.
The filing also makes several serious allegations about what happened next. According to the lawsuit:
- Pal remained unconscious and bleeding on the ground
- Some individuals allegedly recorded video while he was lying there
- Emergency services were not called immediately
The petition claims that 911 was contacted roughly 30 to 40 minutes after Pal lost consciousness.
Emergency responders from the Norman Police Department eventually arrived after receiving a report of a possible carjacking. When officers reached the scene, they found Pal unresponsive about 15 feet away from the truck.
Medical Findings and Death
Pal was taken to a hospital where he was placed on life support. He remained in critical condition for several days before he was pronounced dead on March 7, 2025.
According to the medical examiner’s report, his death was ruled a homicide caused by acute blunt force trauma to the head.
This classification indicates that the death resulted from injuries inflicted by another person.
No Criminal Charges Filed
Despite the homicide ruling, prosecutors decided not to file criminal charges.
A spokesperson from the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office explained that the available evidence did not meet the legal threshold for criminal liability.
According to the statement:
“The evidence presented to our office did not show that there was an act perpetrated against Mr. Pal that rose to criminal liability.”
As a result, no one has been criminally charged in connection with the incident.
Family Seeks Damages in Civil Case
Since criminal charges were not filed, the Pal family is now pursuing a civil lawsuit.
The lawsuit seeks punitive damages, which would be determined by a jury if the case goes to trial.
The filing also lists the City of Norman as a respondent. However, city officials said they cannot comment on the matter because they have not yet been formally served with the complaint.
Friends and loved ones remember Jozsef Pal as a strong, determined athlete and a dedicated teammate. Those close to him say they hope the legal process will bring clarity and accountability regarding the events that led to his death.
