Oklahoma officials are recognising the efforts of a dedicated investigative team that continues to bring answers in long-unsolved cases, offering hope and closure to families across the state.
OSBI Cold Case Unit honoured at State Capitol
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Cold Case Unit was recently honoured at the State Capitol for its work in solving long-pending cases. Since its creation in 2018, the unit has successfully solved 98 cold cases, including homicides and missing persons cases, making a significant impact on public safety in Oklahoma.
Lawmakers praise the unit’s achievements
State Representative Carl Newton praised the team’s efforts, calling their work important for both justice and community safety. He highlighted that the unit has averaged around 13 case closures each year over the past seven and a half years. According to him, this success rate stands out when compared to other states of similar size.
Role of modern forensic technology
Officials also credited advancements in forensic science for improving investigation outcomes. The use of modern tools such as DNA analysis has played a key role in solving older cases.
According to Hunter McKee, rapid DNA testing is now being used across the state, allowing investigators to get results within 90 minutes instead of waiting weeks or months.
He also pointed out that genetic genealogy has become an important tool, helping investigators find new leads in cases that were once considered unsolvable.
Hundreds of cases still under review
Despite the progress, more than 400 cold case homicides are still under review in Oklahoma, along with many missing and unidentified person cases.
Officials explained that a case is labelled “cold” when all active leads have been exhausted, but it is never permanently closed. Investigators continue to revisit these cases whenever new evidence or technology becomes available.
Challenges faced by families
While the success of solving cold cases is encouraging, advocates say families often face emotional and practical challenges during long investigations.
Amanda Newland-Davis, founder of a nonprofit supporting cold case victims’ families, said many families struggle due to limited communication and lack of resources.
She explained that investigators often do not have enough manpower to keep families regularly updated.
Importance of closure and ongoing efforts
Advocates emphasise that every solved case brings a sense of closure, even after many years of uncertainty.
The OSBI Cold Case Unit operates under the motto “Never Forgotten,” showing its commitment to continuing investigations regardless of how old the case is.
Officials also encourage the public to come forward with any information, as even small tips can help move cases forward.
The recognition of Oklahoma’s Cold Case Unit highlights the importance of persistence, technology, and teamwork in solving long-standing mysteries.
While nearly 100 cases have been resolved, many more remain, and families continue to wait for answers.
The combination of modern forensic tools and continued public support offers hope that more cases will be solved in the future, bringing justice and closure to those affected.
