The actor explained that his decision was based on his strong love and respect for his wife, but many people failed to understand it.

McDonough admitted that the situation badly affected his personal life. He shared that he struggled with heavy drinking during that period and eventually faced serious financial problems.
According to the actor, his family lost their home and many of the things they had worked hard for. He said he felt like he had failed his wife and children during that difficult time.

McDonough also revealed that late actor Luke Perry helped his family during their toughest days. He said Perry welcomed them into his home while they were struggling.
