A road rage incident in Miami has led to serious criminal charges after a man allegedly fired a gun at another driver during a heated confrontation on a busy roadway. Authorities say the suspect pulled alongside the victim’s vehicle, threatened him, and discharged a firearm during heavy traffic. The accused driver is now in custody and facing multiple felony charges.
Road Rage Incident in Miami
The suspect, Raul Alejandro Fontaine, 24, has been charged with several offenses, including:
- Second-degree attempted murder
- Discharging a firearm from a vehicle
- Unlawfully discharging a firearm in a public place
The incident occurred in Miami and was reported to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office shortly after noon on Saturday.
Victim Reports the Shooting
According to a probable cause affidavit, the victim went directly to the Hammocks District station to report the alleged road rage attack.
The victim also brought important evidence with him — the spent slug from the bullet that had been fired in his direction.
Deputies then accompanied the victim to the scene near the 13300 block of Southwest 88th Street, where they found damage to a nearby wall consistent with a bullet impact.
Confrontation Began While Driving
The victim told investigators he was driving west along SW 88th Street when the suspect, driving a Jeep Gladiator, pulled onto the sidewalk next to his vehicle.
According to the report, Fontaine allegedly yelled at the victim and demanded that he get out of his car.
The victim told police the suspect shouted threats and aggressive remarks during the encounter.
He managed to drive away from the initial confrontation, but authorities say Fontaine continued following him.
Shot Fired During Traffic
The victim told investigators that Fontaine pulled up beside his driver’s side window and allegedly threatened to shoot him.
Moments later, Fontaine reportedly fired a gun from his vehicle while traffic was heavy on the roadway.
According to the affidavit, the gunshot narrowly missed the victim.
The bullet struck a nearby wall and then fell into the street near the victim’s vehicle.
Police described the act as extremely dangerous because multiple vehicles were on the road at the time.
Victim Collected Evidence and Tracked the Suspect
Because his car was stopped at the time of the shooting, the victim was able to get out and retrieve the spent bullet round from the road.
He then followed the suspect’s vehicle while recording video on his cellphone.
The victim captured the vehicle and its license plate, which later helped investigators identify the suspect.
After obtaining the license plate information, he went directly to the sheriff’s office to report the incident.
Authorities then issued a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) alert for the Jeep Gladiator.
Suspect Arrested After Vehicle Located
Deputies soon found the suspect vehicle parked outside a residence near the 13000 block of SW 202nd Avenue in Miami.
Law enforcement set up a perimeter around the area.
Fontaine was later spotted walking nearby and was taken into custody without incident.
Suspect’s Statement to Police
During a post-arrest interview, conducted after receiving Miranda warnings, Fontaine admitted he had been involved in the road rage confrontation.
However, he claimed the shot was fired at a nearby wall in an attempt to scare the other driver rather than to hit him.
Investigators say the circumstances of the shooting still pose serious public safety concerns due to the heavy traffic and close proximity to the victim.
Current Legal Status
Fontaine is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
Authorities say he is being held without bond.
He is scheduled to appear in court for a pretrial detention hearing on Wednesday.
