A heartbreaking incident in Tennessee has left a young life lost and two families shattered. A 28-year-old man, Jackson Hopper, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend, Ellie Young, during a public cancer awareness event.
Tragic Shooting During Cancer Walk
The incident took place on October 19, 2024, at Shelby Farms Park. Ellie Young, a 22-year-old medical student, had just taken part in a breast cancer walk organised by the American Cancer Society.
After the event, she returned to her vehicle in the parking area. That’s when a white SUV pulled up behind her Jeep. According to police, the driver began firing shots into her car without warning.
Brutal Attack Caught on Evidence
Investigators revealed disturbing details during the court hearing. Surveillance footage showed that after initially shooting, the attacker came closer and fired multiple more shots.
In total, Ellie Young was shot six times, all in the head. The shocking nature of the attack left everyone in the courtroom deeply affected.
Accused Identified as Ex-Boyfriend
Police quickly identified the suspect as Jackson Hopper, Young’s ex-boyfriend. Family members at the scene informed officers that the couple had recently broken up.
Authorities issued an alert for Hopper’s vehicle, a white Honda CRV. Soon after, law enforcement spotted the car in a nearby county.
Dangerous Police Chase
When officers tried to stop Hopper, he refused and led police on a high-speed chase across multiple areas. During the pursuit:
- He drove dangerously, even into oncoming traffic
- Attempted to hit police vehicles
- Ignored multiple warnings to stop
The chase finally ended when officers used a PIT manoeuvre to stop his vehicle. He was taken into custody, although he initially resisted arrest.
Court Decision and Sentence
Hopper later reached an agreement with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. The judge, Carlyn L. Addison, sentenced him to 40 years in a state prison.
The court explained that the plea deal was accepted to avoid putting the victim’s family through the pain of a full trial, where they would have had to relive the horrifying details.
Family’s Pain and Legal Perspective
During sentencing, the judge acknowledged the deep emotional damage caused by the crime. She said the pain experienced by both families is beyond measure and will continue for years.
Prosecutors also supported the plea deal, saying it would help the victim’s family avoid further trauma. The family’s lawyer agreed, stating that going through a trial could have caused even more emotional harm.
Even Hopper’s defence lawyer admitted the case was deeply tragic and expressed that some situations are impossible to fully undo, no matter the outcome.
Additional Legal Trouble
Apart from the murder charge, Hopper is also facing other charges related to the police chase. These include reckless driving, attempting to harm officers, and other serious offences across different counties.
