A North Carolina man has been sentenced to decades in prison after admitting to killing his wife and throwing her body into a lake from a bridge. Prosecutors said the shocking crime happened because he wanted to escape an arranged marriage that had become unhappy.
North Carolina Man Sentenced for Killing Wife
Omar Matthew Ibrahim Drabick, 37, received a prison sentence of 25 to 31 years for second-degree murder in the death of his wife, Hadeel Ghadhanfer Hikmat, 34.
He was also sentenced to an additional six to nine years for concealing her death. According to court officials, both sentences will run one after another.
Drabick had originally faced a first-degree murder charge before the case was resolved.
Victim’s Body Found in Jordan Lake
The case began on Aug. 29, 2023, when a boater discovered Hikmat’s body in Jordan Lake, located about 30 miles west of Raleigh, North Carolina.
Investigators later found:
- Shell casings on a nearby bridge
- Blood evidence
- The victim’s jewelry
Police determined that Hikmat had been shot in the back before her body was thrown into the lake.
Marriage Was Reportedly Arranged
According to investigators, Hikmat had moved to the United States roughly one year before her death after Drabick’s mother arranged the marriage between the couple.
Court documents stated that Drabick later became unhappy in the marriage and searched for ways to leave the relationship.
Authorities said he allegedly hoped his wife would leave him for a wealthy man so he could avoid remaining in the marriage.
Last Hours Before the Murder
On the night of the killing, Drabick reportedly picked up Hikmat from the Walmart where she worked.
The couple later went to eat at a Denny’s restaurant before the situation turned deadly.
Drabick later told a friend that they met a man from Iraq at a park during the early morning hours. He claimed the man kissed Hikmat and convinced her to leave with him.
However, the friend reportedly told police that the story did not make sense and seemed untrue.
Investigators Found Strong Evidence
Police later discovered evidence connecting Drabick directly to the crime.
According to investigators:
| Evidence Found | Details |
|---|---|
| Blood evidence | Victim’s blood found on Drabick’s shoes |
| Vehicle evidence | Blood located in trunk of car |
| Weapon purchase | Gun reportedly bought shortly before murder |
| Internet searches | Searches about getting away with murder |
Authorities determined Drabick drove Hikmat to the bridge shortly after 2:30 a.m. before fatally shooting her.
Court Hears Emotional Statements
During sentencing, prosecutor Marci Trageser said the tragic situation escalated in a way nobody expected.
Drabick’s mother also spoke in court and said she felt partly responsible because she arranged the marriage.
However, the judge told her she should not blame herself for the crime.
Superior Court Judge Allen Baddour stated that no one enters an arranged marriage expecting such a violent outcome.
Defense Mentioned Autism Diagnosis
Defense attorneys argued that Drabick had autism and struggled with social and emotional communication skills.
They claimed he lacked the ability to properly manage problems in the marriage or end the relationship peacefully.
Before sentencing, Drabick reportedly apologized in court and expressed remorse for what happened.
Case Highlights Domestic Violence Concerns
The case has drawn major attention because of its disturbing details and the tragic death of a woman who had recently moved to the United States.
It also raised conversations about domestic violence, mental health, and relationship pressures within arranged marriages.
Authorities say the evidence gathered during the investigation played a major role in securing the conviction and lengthy prison sentence.
