A shocking case from Kentucky has drawn attention after a young man was found guilty of killing his girlfriend in a disturbing incident. The crime, which took place in 2023, has now reached a major turning point with the court’s verdict. The case highlights serious concerns about domestic violence and the consequences of such actions.
Man Found Guilty of Girlfriend’s Murder
A 23-year-old man named Damien Hebbeler has been convicted of intentionally murdering his 20-year-old girlfriend, Kylie Marie Weitz. The verdict was announced by a jury in Lewis County, Kentucky, after reviewing the evidence presented during the trial.
The Kentucky Attorney General’s Office confirmed the conviction, stating that justice has finally been served. Officials also emphasised that crimes related to domestic violence are taken very seriously in the state.
Incident Took Place in August 2023
The tragic incident happened on August 9, 2023, at a home located in Garrison, a small area near the Ohio border. According to reports, police received a call around 6 p.m. about an unresponsive woman.
Initially, the caller claimed that the victim had accidentally shot herself. However, when officers arrived at the scene, they found Kylie lying near the front door with a gunshot wound to her face. She was declared dead on the spot.
Accused Confessed to the Crime
Just a few hours after the incident, Damien Hebbeler was arrested. During the investigation, he admitted to pointing a loaded gun at Kylie’s face and pulling the trigger.
This confession played a key role in the case. Authorities later confirmed that the shot was fired at close range, leaving no doubt about the intention behind the act.
Use of a “Special Bullet” Revealed
During the trial, another shocking detail came to light. Hebbeler admitted that he was carrying what he called a “special bullet.” Investigators confirmed that this same bullet was used in the fatal shooting.
While the exact nature of the bullet was not fully explained, its mention added to the seriousness of the case and raised concerns about the accused’s mindset.
Warning Signs Before the Crime
Officials revealed that the incident was not completely unexpected. Less than a year before the murder, Hebbeler had reportedly made statements about wanting to kill Kylie.
These warning signs show that there may have been ongoing issues in the relationship, highlighting the importance of recognising and addressing threats early.
Remembering Kylie Marie Weitz
Kylie was remembered as a lively and kind young woman who was loved by many. She worked as a waitress and enjoyed activities like cheerleading, running track, playing volleyball, and spending time with friends.
Her family and community described her as someone full of life, whose sudden loss has left a deep impact on everyone who knew her.
Possible 50-Year Sentence
After finding Hebbeler guilty, the jury recommended a sentence of 50 years in prison. The final decision will be made by a judge, with sentencing scheduled for June 5.
If the recommendation is accepted, Hebbeler could spend several decades behind bars for his actions.
