A late-night incident in California took a tragic turn after a bar fight led to a man fleeing the scene and later being found seriously injured near a hotel. What initially seemed like a simple altercation ended in a fatal outcome, leaving authorities investigating the full sequence of events.
Bar Fight in Monterey Turns Serious
The incident happened in the early hours of March 28 in Monterey, located on California’s Central Coast. Around 1:09 a.m., police officers on patrol noticed a fight between two individuals near a popular bar.
When officers reached the spot, they found one person lying on the ground, apparently unconscious after the altercation. Meanwhile, the second individual involved in the fight ran away from the scene.
Suspect Flees as Police Give Chase
Police immediately chased the fleeing man, but they lost sight of him near Cannery Row, a well-known area in Monterey.
Authorities then started searching nearby locations, including a hotel in the area, but were unable to find the man at that time.
Injured Victim Recovers and Leaves Hospital
The person who was injured during the fight was taken to a local hospital. Fortunately, they were later released.
However, the victim refused to share details about the incident, making it harder for police to understand what exactly led to the fight.
Hotel Footage Reveals Shocking Moment
Later that morning, around 8:14 a.m., police were called to the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa after staff reviewed CCTV footage from the night before.
The footage showed a man jumping over a hotel patio railing just minutes after the fight. The patio was about two storeys high and overlooked a rocky beach below.
Family Reports Missing Person
At nearly the same time, a concerned family member visited the police station, asking about a relative who had not returned home after the incident.
Police confirmed that the man had not been arrested and began a wider search operation with additional support, including a fireboat.
Body Found Near Rocky Beach
Just before noon, authorities discovered the missing man near the area where he likely landed after the fall. He was found beneath a walkway close to the beach.
The man was immediately taken to a hospital, but sadly, he later died from his injuries.
Investigation Still Ongoing
Police have not yet released the identity of the deceased man. Officials are continuing to investigate the case to understand the exact circumstances behind the fight and the man’s actions afterward.
Authorities from both the Monterey Police Department and the county coroner’s office are involved in the investigation.
