A disturbing case from Gilgo Beach has once again brought attention to the area’s dark reputation. A man is now accused of trying to kill his acquaintance in a shocking knife attack at a location already linked to past serial killings.
Accused Identified in Attempted Murder Case
Ruben Guanipa Ramirez, aged 26, has been charged with second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault. The charges were announced by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
Officials claim the accused planned and carried out a violent attack on a man he knew.
How the Incident Began
According to prosecutors, the incident started on February 28 when Ramirez picked up the victim from Queens.
The two men then:
- Travelled to Baldwin
- Spent time playing pool at a billiards hall
- Continued driving toward Long Island
What appeared to be a normal outing soon turned into a dangerous situation.
Trip to Gilgo Beach
After stopping briefly at Jones Beach, the pair headed to Gilgo Beach.
This location is already known due to its connection with multiple human remains found over the years and the high-profile case involving Rex Heuermann.
The area’s history makes this latest incident even more alarming.
Details of the Alleged Attack
Prosecutors say the attack happened while the two were walking back to the car.
The accused allegedly:
- Attacked the victim from behind
- Covered his mouth with a cloth
- Stabbed him on the side
- Attempted to slit his throat
During the struggle:
- The victim suffered injuries to his hands while defending himself
- He managed to take the knife away from the attacker
This act of self-defense likely saved his life.
Victim’s Escape and Emergency Response
After the struggle, both men returned to the vehicle. At that point:
- Ramirez got out of the car
- The victim drove away from the scene
Not familiar with the area, the victim contacted emergency services and drove to a friend’s house in Queens.
Officers from the New York City Police Department met him there, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Arrest and Evidence Found
Ramirez was arrested later the same day while walking along a highway in Nassau County.
During a search of his vehicle, authorities reportedly found:
- Three kitchen knives (one with possible blood)
- Rope and duct tape
- Blankets and plastic coverings
- Gloves and a box cutter
- A large wheeled bag
These items raised serious concerns about what prosecutors believe may have been planned.
Legal Status and Possible Punishment
A judge has ordered Ramirez to be held on $200,000 bail. If convicted on the most serious charge, he could face:
- 5 to 25 years in prison
At this stage, it is unclear whether he has entered a plea or hired a lawyer.
