A tragic incident in Texas has raised serious concerns about the safety of rideshare drivers. A 27-year-old driver, Philip Kim, lost his life after being allegedly lured into a deadly trap by a rider using a fake identity. Now, his family has filed a lawsuit claiming that the company failed to protect its drivers despite knowing about similar dangers in the area.
Driver Lured and Killed During Ride
Philip Kim, who worked as a driver for Lyft, was dispatched to pick up a rider in Harris County on February 26, 2025. According to his family, the ride request was made using a fake identity.
During the trip, Kim was reportedly attacked, shot, and left on the roadside. The suspect then fled the scene using Kim’s vehicle, leaving him fatally injured.
Family Files Lawsuit Against Lyft
Kim’s family has taken legal action against Lyft, accusing the company of negligence. In their complaint, they claim that Lyft was aware of recent violent incidents targeting drivers in the same area but failed to warn or protect them.
The lawsuit argues that:
- Lyft knew about earlier carjackings involving drivers
- The company still sent Kim to a high-risk location
- No safety alerts or warnings were shared with drivers
The family believes that this lack of action directly contributed to Kim’s death.
Previous Incidents Raise Concerns
According to the complaint, at least two similar incidents had taken place just days before Kim’s murder. In those cases, rideshare drivers were reportedly robbed at gunpoint and had their vehicles stolen.
These incidents happened very close to the location where Kim was sent for the ride. Despite this, the lawsuit claims Lyft continued normal operations without adding extra safety measures.
Suspect and Criminal Charges
Authorities have charged 18-year-old Anthony Perkins with capital murder in connection with Kim’s death. Prosecutors say he shot Kim and drove away in his car, which was later found crashed nearby.
Perkins is also accused of being involved in the earlier attacks on other drivers. In one case, he allegedly used his mother’s account to book a ride and then threatened the driver with a weapon.
Police believe two other individuals, possibly minors, were also involved in the crime. One has been caught, while the other is still being searched for.
Disturbing Details From Investigation
Court documents reveal that in a previous incident, a driver picked up what he thought was a female passenger. Instead, he found two males who soon pulled out guns and threatened him.
The victim described the weapons as powerful firearms. This shows a clear pattern of organised targeting of rideshare drivers using fake accounts.
Father’s Emotional Account
Philip Kim’s father, Mark Kim, shared his painful experience after his son went missing. He said he became worried when his son stopped answering calls.
Using a tracking device, he saw the car moving and later ending up near a police station. That’s when he realised something was seriously wrong.
He later said his son was simply trying to earn money honestly and did not deserve such a tragic end. His emotional words reflect the pain and confusion the family continues to face.
Legal Battle and Demand for Accountability
The family’s lawyer stated that this case is not just about one crime but a larger issue of safety failures. They argue that rideshare platforms can be misused by criminals and should have stronger safety systems in place.
The lawsuit aims to:
- Hold Lyft accountable for negligence
- Push for better safety features
- Prevent similar tragedies in the future
Lyft has responded by saying it cannot comment on an ongoing legal matter.
