A tragic ATV crash in Kentucky has left a community grieving after a 16-year-old girl died and another teenager now faces criminal charges. Authorities say the crash happened late at night in a small Appalachian town, and investigators believe alcohol may have played a role.
The victim’s school, friends and family are mourning the loss of a young student remembered for her kindness and bright personality.
Teen Charged After Fatal ATV Crash
Police say a 16-year-old girl has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) following a deadly ATV crash. Because she is a minor, officials have not released her name.
According to the Perry County Sheriff’s Department, the crash resulted in the death of Emilynn Clark, who was also 16 years old.
Clark was riding on the ATV along with two other passengers when the accident occurred.
Crash Happened in Eastern Kentucky Community
The crash took place around 9 p.m. on February 28 on Oakwood Avenue in Vicco.
Vicco is a small community located roughly 130 miles southeast of Lexington.
Investigators say the ATV left the roadway and went over an embankment, causing severe injuries to the passengers.
Clark later died from her injuries, while another passenger was seriously hurt.
Community Mourning the Loss
Local officials say the crash has deeply affected the entire community.
Joe Engle said the tragedy has been especially painful because the people involved were close friends.
According to the sheriff, Clark and the driver were best friends, which has added another emotional layer to the situation.
He said many students, teachers and residents are struggling with the loss.
Clark was a sophomore at Perry County Central High School, where classmates and staff are mourning her death.
In a statement, the school expressed deep sadness and asked the community to keep Clark’s family and friends in their thoughts.
Victim Remembered by Family
Clark’s family described her as a joyful and caring person who made a lasting impact on those around her.
A GoFundMe created to help with funeral expenses and a memorial shared heartfelt memories about the teenager.
Family members said Clark was known for her infectious smile and friendly personality.
She enjoyed playing sports, including:
- Volleyball
- Basketball
Friends and relatives say she was loved by everyone who knew her.
Alcohol Suspected in the Crash
Authorities say alcohol may have been involved in the incident.
Sheriff Engle said investigators believe alcohol was a factor, but testing is still ongoing.
A blood sample collected from the scene is currently being analyzed.
Investigators are also reviewing surveillance footage from local businesses to determine where the alcohol may have been purchased.
Investigation Expands Beyond the Crash
The case involves several ongoing investigations.
Authorities previously mentioned that two adult men could also face charges connected to the incident. That statement was later clarified as investigators continue working with prosecutors.
One person involved in the investigation is Noah Back, who has been identified as the owner of the ATV.
Police executed a search warrant to obtain his cell phone, which will be analyzed as part of another investigation separate from the crash.
Possible Additional Charges
Officials say the case could lead to more serious charges depending on the outcome of the investigation.
Sheriff Engle said prosecutors will determine what evidence should be presented to a grand jury.
Possible charges that could be considered include:
- Vehicular homicide
- Manslaughter
Those decisions will ultimately depend on the evidence collected during the investigation.
Multiple Agencies Reviewing the Case
Several agencies are involved in reviewing what happened that night.
Investigations are currently being conducted by:
- The Perry County Sheriff’s Office
- Social services officials
- The Perry County School District
Authorities say they want to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the crash before making further legal decisions.
