Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman took a bold stance Friday, breaking with many of his Democratic colleagues as he criticized the party’s ongoing focus on anti-Trump rhetoric.
In a candid conversation on the latest episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, Fetterman called for a shift away from the party’s current strategy, which he believes is overly reliant on framing campaigns around opposition to former President Donald Trump.
Fetterman’s Critique of Anti-Trump Campaigns
During his interview, Fetterman expressed frustration with the Democrats’ fixation on attacking Trump, stating that many campaign ads and messages are primarily centered around the theme of “f— Trump.”
“My colleagues, and people that are running, whether for the Senate or the House, they’re literally running on f— Trump,” Fetterman said. “They have campaign commercials [with that message]. It’s absurd…”
Fetterman, known for his independent-minded approach within the party, rejected this approach, arguing that it does not present a constructive or positive vision for the future. “I refuse to engage in those extreme terms, and we have to find a better way forward,” he added.

Fetterman also clarified that his comments should not be viewed as an endorsement of changing parties. “If I ever decide to change, and I won’t, have me on, and I’ll announce that,” he joked.
He emphasized his commitment to the Democratic Party, stating, “I’m a committed Democrat… I vote 93% of the time [with the Democrats].
I thought we were supposed to be a ‘big tent’ party, so I’m not sure how I became an issue for any of the Democrats, just by having some different views.”
