A horrifying case from Mississippi has shaken the local community after police discovered what they described as one of the most disturbing crime scenes they had ever seen. A retired teacher, loved by her family and community, was found dead after a welfare check at her home. The most shocking part of the case is that her own youngest son is now accused of killing and dismembering her.
Retired Teacher Reported Missing in Natchez
The victim was identified as 62-year-old Lana Brown Bradley, a retired teacher from Natchez, Mississippi. Deputies from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office went to her home on April 4 after a family member became worried and requested a welfare check.
According to reports, Bradley’s oldest son had been trying to contact her for two days but did not get any response. Since this was unusual, he contacted authorities. Bradley lived in the home with her two younger sons, including 29-year-old Zachary Lavel Jackson Jr. Her middle son was reportedly at work and not inside the house when police arrived.
Police Notice Signs of a Cleanup
When deputies entered the home, they immediately noticed a strong smell of chemicals. Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said it appeared that someone had been cleaning the house. He also said the floor was extremely slippery, which made the situation even more suspicious.
The victim’s older son reportedly told police that it was unusual for Jackson, the youngest son, to be cleaning the house in that way. At that point, Bradley was still missing, and officers continued searching the property.
Locked Bathroom Leads to a Shocking Discovery
While investigators were inside the home, one of them heard splashing sounds coming from a locked bathroom. When they got inside, they found Zachary Lavel Jackson Jr. in the bathroom.
Police also found a toilet filled with a black substance. Sheriff Patten later confirmed that the substance was believed to be Bradley’s flesh. Investigators say Jackson was allegedly trying to flush pieces of his mother’s body down the toilet to hide evidence.
Body Parts Found Outside the Home
The search then moved outside the house. Family members and deputies checked a wooded area near the property. During the search, someone reportedly shouted after finding what appeared to be Bradley’s head.
Authorities also said some body parts were discovered inside a suitcase. Sheriff Patten said the victim had been dismembered in such a way that anyone looking for her would have had to search very carefully to find the remains.

Zachary Lavel Jackson Jr. has been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, mayhem, and tampering with evidence. At first, police only described him as a family member, but he was later confirmed to be Bradley’s youngest son.
Sheriff Patten said this was one of the most heinous crimes he had seen in his entire career. Investigators believe Jackson tried to cover up the killing by cleaning the home and disposing of body parts.
Possible Eviction and Threats Before Death
According to Sheriff Patten, family members told investigators that Bradley had become afraid for her safety while living with her youngest son. She was reportedly planning to evict him from the home.
Police also said Jackson allegedly threatened his mother the day before her body was discovered. Investigators are looking at this as a possible key part of the case.
Mental Health Claims and Police Response
Family members reportedly told police that Jackson was mentally unstable. However, Sheriff Patten said the crime appeared to be very calculated. According to him, the way the body was hidden and the house was cleaned showed planning and effort to avoid detection.
Jackson waived his right to a preliminary hearing in court on Tuesday. He remains in custody at the Adams County Jail, and the case will now be presented to a grand jury. His next court date has not been made public.
