Millions of Americans are facing severe weather threats as blizzard conditions, potential tornadoes, and record-breaking high temperatures are forecasted to impact much of the United States over the coming days. With over 11.5 million people under blizzard warnings and 20.6 million under extreme heat watches, the nation is bracing for life-threatening weather conditions.
Blizzard Conditions Hit Northern Plains and Upper Great Lakes
A rapidly intensifying storm has caused blizzard conditions in parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Great Lakes. As of Sunday, snow accumulations of more than 20 inches were reported in southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Dangerous travel conditions with low visibility and snow-covered roads have forced authorities to issue no-travel advisories and close highways in some areas.
In addition to the snowstorm, over 600 flights were canceled at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport on Sunday. The storm is expected to continue into Monday, bringing more snow, including lake-effect snow, to the region.
Winter Storm Warnings and Flight Cancellations
Winter storm warnings have been issued for parts of Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin, as transportation officials warn of worsening conditions. Snowplow drivers, like Aaron Haas in Wisconsin, reported some of the worst conditions in years, with snowdrifts as high as the truck. Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota has deployed the National Guard to assist with emergency operations.
Severe Weather Threat Expands Eastward
The same storm that brought blizzard conditions to the Midwest is also fueling severe storms in the East. A squall line moving across the Midwest and South will bring an increased risk of tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, hail, and flash flooding. The Mid-Atlantic, from South Carolina to Maryland, is most likely to experience damaging winds on Monday afternoon, including cities like Raleigh, NC, Richmond, VA, and Washington, D.C.
The storms are expected to push toward the East Coast, affecting the Lower Great Lakes and Tennessee valleys before intensifying as they head toward the Eastern Seaboard.
Record-Breaking Heat in the West
While the central and eastern parts of the U.S. brace for severe storms, the West is preparing for an unusually early heat wave. Starting Monday and continuing through the week, record-high temperatures are expected in Southern California, the Desert Southwest, and the Great Basin. Temperatures in desert areas could climb into the 90s and 100s, while California and much of the interior West will see highs in the 70s and 80s.
The dry and warm conditions, combined with gusty winds, have also raised concerns about wildfire danger, particularly in Nebraska, where National Guard members have been deployed to combat multiple wildfires. Some of the largest fires have already damaged over 900 square miles, and the state is urging residents to follow evacuation orders.
Flash Flooding and Landslides in Hawaii
Severe weather in Hawaii has resulted in devastating flash floods, landslides, and power outages. Heavy rain, including rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, led to widespread flooding across Maui, Molokai, and the Big Island. Some areas of Maui received as much as 20 inches of rain in just 24 hours, and authorities have reported collapsed roads and power lines.
The National Guard and local fire departments have been actively rescuing people stranded by floodwaters. More than 30,000 homes lost power as a result of the flooding, and shelters have been opened to support displaced residents. Maui County officials expressed gratitude for the community’s resilience, emphasizing the importance of helping each other during these challenging times.
