A shocking development has emerged in a house explosion case that happened several years ago in Pennsylvania. Authorities now say the father of the family may have been responsible for the devastating blast that destroyed their home. For years, the incident was considered a tragic accident, but new evidence has led investigators to file serious criminal charges.
Father Charged Years After House Explosion
Police have arrested 41-year-old Jacob Rabb in connection with a house explosion that occurred in April 2022 in Plum, Pennsylvania.
According to court records, Rabb is facing several serious charges, including four counts of attempted criminal homicide, aggravated arson, and arson endangering people. He is also charged with arson endangering property and arson causing or risking catastrophe.
Authorities say Rabb is currently being held in the Allegheny County Jail without bail.
Explosion Destroyed Family Home in 2022
The explosion happened around 11 p.m. on April 22, 2022, at the family’s home on Hialeah Drive.
At the time of the incident, Rabb was at home with his wife, Laura Petty, and their three young sons, who were 11, 6, and 2 years old.
Petty later said she had been sleeping while Rabb had fallen asleep in the living room.
Suddenly, a powerful explosion destroyed the home.
Petty said she woke up confused and trapped in bed with the roof collapsed around her.
She later explained that she did not remember hearing or feeling the blast and only realized what had happened after waking up under the debris.
Family Escaped the Burning House
Despite the destruction, all five family members managed to escape the house.
Petty credited Rabb at the time for helping everyone get out safely. She told reporters that he ran around the home making sure the entire family made it outside.
However, the explosion did cause serious injuries. The couple’s 11-year-old son reportedly suffered first-degree burns during the incident.
The blast shocked residents in the Plum community, which is located just east of Pittsburgh. For years, neighbors wondered what had caused the explosion.
Investigators Identify Possible Cause
After a long investigation, authorities now believe the explosion was caused intentionally.
According to investigators, Rabb allegedly disconnected the gas line connected to the home’s dryer earlier that day.
Officials believe natural gas leaked from the disconnected line and eventually ignited, possibly from a nearby furnace.
A deputy fire marshal determined that the fire was caused by natural gas vapors that were released due to the manual tampering with the gas connection.
Handwritten Notes Raise Suspicion
Months after the explosion destroyed the house, Petty reportedly separated from Rabb and sought a protection-from-abuse order.
During that time, she allegedly discovered two handwritten notes inside a kitchen cabinet.
One of the notes reportedly contained a disturbing message that suggested if he could not have her, no one else would.
Another note allegedly included the statement, “P.S. I did blow up the house.”
These notes became important pieces of evidence during the investigation.
Father Claims Suspect Admitted to Explosion
Police also spoke with Rabb’s father during the investigation.
According to authorities, the father told investigators that Rabb admitted to causing the explosion.
However, Rabb has reportedly denied telling his wife that he was responsible for the blast.
Suspect Awaiting Court Hearing
Rabb appeared in court for a preliminary arraignment earlier this week.
He remains in custody without bail and is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing in about a week.
Investigators continue to review evidence as the case moves through the legal system.
