A tragic case in Pennsylvania has ended with a 20-year-old man sentenced to decades in prison for killing his pregnant girlfriend. Kaiheem Williams was convicted of fatally shooting 19-year-old Tanyiah Bell in their Lansdowne apartment in November 2024.
Man Sentenced for Killing Pregnant Girlfriend
In April, a Delaware County jury found Williams guilty of third-degree murder, aggravated assault of an unborn child, and possessing an instrument of crime. Pennsylvania is one of only three states in the U.S. that still recognises third-degree murder.
On Thursday, Delaware County Court of Common Pleas Judge Margaret Amoroso sentenced Williams to 22 to 44 years in prison. Addressing Bell’s mother, Tylicia Bell, the judge said, “I see your pain, I do. I see it, but I can’t imagine it.”
Shooting Incident
The fatal shooting happened in the couple’s apartment in Lansdowne, a small town just west of Philadelphia. Williams himself called 911, telling responders he had “blacked out” after smoking. He admitted, “I was fried, man. I was outside smoking.”
Bell was eight months pregnant at the time, and Williams shot her in the head with a .45-caliber handgun while she was watching TV.
She was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where doctors tried to save her unborn child. The baby, later named Miracle Bell by her grandmother, was born alive but brain-dead and required life support.
Miracle’s Struggle and Progress
Miracle remains on life support and needs near-constant care but has learned to move her arms, legs, and head.
Her grandmother, Tylicia, shared, “Sometimes I feel frustration and rage because I look at her and it reminds me of her dad. But caring for her brings joy. My grandbaby brightens my day.”
Details from the Investigation
During police interviews, Williams said he had been alone with Bell in the apartment before the shooting. He claimed he was trying to put a trigger lock on the gun and thought it was unloaded. However, the weapon fired, hitting Bell in the head. He then panicked, used her phone to call 911, and claimed he didn’t intend to shoot her.
Doorbell video showed Williams leaving the apartment about 15 minutes before reporting the incident. Police also recovered a .45-caliber bullet from his pocket. Despite his claims of accident, the jury found him guilty of the charges.
Court Reactions and Sentence
Judge Amoroso acknowledged the pain suffered by the victim’s family during sentencing. Williams will spend the next 22 to 44 years in prison. Miracle’s life continues to be a daily reminder of the tragedy, but her family remains committed to giving her love and care.
This heartbreaking case highlights the devastating consequences of gun violence and the lifelong impact it can have on families, particularly innocent children caught in tragic circumstances.
