A disturbing case in Texas has led to the arrest of a 46-year-old man who is accused of keeping his disabled wife locked inside a bedroom for several years. Authorities say the woman had very limited contact with the outside world and was only able to call for help after using her husband’s phone when he accidentally left it behind.
Texas Man Arrested for Allegedly Locking Disabled Wife in Bedroom
James Earl Johnson, 46, was arrested in Texas and charged with injury to a disabled individual and abandoning or endangering a disabled individual, according to court records.
Prosecutors say Johnson kept his 46-year-old wife locked inside a bedroom in their home in southeast Houston for about five years. Investigators say she had no access to a phone and was mostly isolated from the outside world during that time.
Authorities believe the alleged abuse continued until the woman was finally able to contact emergency services.
Victim Managed to Call 911 After Finding Phone
According to investigators, the woman was able to call 911 after Johnson accidentally left his phone inside the room before leaving the house.
Using the phone, she made a brief call to emergency services on March 6.
However, court documents say Johnson returned to the house while she was still on the call. Prosecutors allege he struck the woman and forced her back onto the bed before ending the call with the dispatcher.
Despite the interrupted call, the incident helped alert authorities to the situation.
Allegations of Starvation and Lack of Medical Care
Investigators say the woman was also severely neglected during the alleged confinement.
Court records claim Johnson gave her very little food. In some cases, he allegedly left only one egg for her to eat and occasionally provided small portions of dinner.
Police also say he failed to provide regular medical care during the five years she was reportedly confined in the bedroom.
These conditions are part of the charges filed against Johnson.
Police Investigation Leads to Arrest
After the attempted emergency call, police went to the home and began investigating the situation.
Authorities later arrested Johnson and took him into custody.
Medical personnel transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. Days later, she was still receiving medical care, according to her adult son.
He declined to provide details about her health condition or the nature of her disability.
Family Lived in Million-Dollar Home
Court records show the family lived in a large home in the Clear Lake area of Houston.
According to property records from the Harris Central Appraisal District, the house was valued at about $1,019,237 in 2025.
The couple lived there with their children, including one child who was just six years old.
Previous Attempt to Alert Authorities
Documents suggest the woman may have previously tried to alert authorities about the situation.
Police were reportedly called to the home in November. However, when officers arrived, the victim allegedly told them that she and the children had been instructed not to speak with police.
As a result, officers left the scene without filing a report at that time.
Suspect Released on Bond
Johnson was later released from the Harris County Jail after posting a $50,000 bond.
The court has placed several conditions on his release, including:
- No contact with his wife
- Not possessing any firearms
- Wearing a GPS monitoring device
His next court appearance is scheduled for March 18.
