A heartbreaking and deeply disturbing murder case in Kentucky has taken a major turn after a 19-year-old man admitted to brutally killing his grandmother during what he described as a drug-induced mental breakdown.
The shocking crime, which happened in October 2024, has left the local community in disbelief. The victim, 74-year-old Cheri Oliver, was attacked inside her own home by her grandson in a violent and unprovoked assault that prosecutors described as extremely brutal.
Kentucky Teen Pleads Guilty in Grandmother’s Murder
Wyatt Testerman, 19, appeared in Kenton County Circuit Court on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty but mentally ill to one count of murder in the death of his grandmother, Cheri Oliver.
This type of plea means Testerman accepts responsibility for the crime while also acknowledging mental health issues. It allows him to receive psychiatric treatment while serving his prison sentence.
However, prosecutors have made it clear they will still push for the maximum punishment, which could mean life in prison.
Teen Admits Drug Abuse Played a Role
During the court hearing, Testerman openly admitted that substance abuse played a major role in the deadly attack.
According to courtroom reports, he told the judge:
“I had been abusing acid for quite some time. Without reason on that date, I attacked my grandmother, striking her numerous times and killing her.”
He also reportedly told the court that he had been experiencing hallucinations and was not fully connected to reality during that period.
“I didn’t spend too much time thinking in reality,” he said.
Prosecutors later stated that Testerman’s past psychotic episodes had consistently been linked to drug use.
Brutal Attack Inside Family Home
The horrifying incident took place in October 2024 at a home on Ridgewood Drive in Erlanger, Kentucky.
Police responded after receiving reports of a family dispute. When officers arrived, they found 74-year-old Cheri Oliver suffering from severe head injuries.
She was immediately rushed to a hospital, but doctors were unable to save her.
Investigators later revealed that Testerman admitted to attacking his grandmother with his fists before using a metal drinking tumbler as a weapon.
Authorities said Oliver was struck more than 40 times and stomped nearly a dozen times during the attack.
Attack Was Reportedly Recorded on Cellphone
One of the most disturbing details to emerge from the investigation was prosecutors’ claim that Testerman recorded the attack on his cellphone.
Court filings allege that he set up the phone before pushing his grandmother to the floor and repeatedly punching, kicking, and stomping on her.
Investigators said the victim ultimately died from severe blunt force trauma to the head.
According to prosecutors, during the attack Testerman allegedly paused, checked his grandmother’s pulse, and made a chilling statement before continuing the assault with the metal tumbler.
Family Members Tried to Stop the Violence
Witnesses told investigators that the attack appeared to happen without warning.
Testerman’s mother reportedly witnessed the assault and tried to stop her son by striking him with a cane.
Another witness told police that before the attack, Testerman made disturbing comments toward his grandmother, warning that she would “suffer the consequences.”
Despite their efforts, the violence continued until emergency responders arrived.
Insanity Defense Dropped
The case was originally expected to go to trial, and Testerman had planned to use an insanity defense.
However, his defense attorney later said a mental health expert determined that Testerman suffers from antisocial personality disorder and was likely experiencing a psychotic episode caused by voluntary drug use.
Under Kentucky law, drug-induced psychosis does not meet the legal standard for an insanity defense.
That evaluation ultimately led to his guilty but mentally ill plea.
Sentencing Scheduled for July
Wyatt Testerman now faces a possible sentence ranging from 20 to 50 years in prison—or life behind bars.
He is scheduled to appear before Judge Patricia Summe for sentencing on July 7.
