A Michigan man, Zachary Fuqua, has been charged with second-degree murder after he allegedly shot his girlfriend, Erika Sanders, in the back of the head in front of her children. The incident occurred on Tuesday in the city of Warren, about 20 miles north of Detroit, leaving the local community in shock and disbelief.
The Tragic Event
On the evening of March 17, 2026, Fuqua, 39, is accused of shooting 38-year-old Erika Sanders while her three children were present at the home. The children, who were minors, witnessed the horrifying moment when Fuqua allegedly shot Sanders in the back of the head. After committing the crime, Fuqua reportedly fled the scene but not before giving the children candy, telling them, “Here y’all babies go.”
The police arrived at the scene to find Sanders lying face down. Authorities quickly located Fuqua nearby and took him into custody.
Fuqua’s Troubling Social Media Posts
In the days leading up to the tragic shooting, Fuqua’s social media posts suggested he may have been struggling emotionally. A post on his Facebook account from March 14 reads, “Going out with a bang.” This post, coupled with the subsequent murder, has raised questions about Fuqua’s state of mind in the days before the incident.
Legal Proceedings
Fuqua has been charged with second-degree murder. Macomb County Assistant Prosecutor Jonathan Mycek expressed the severity of the situation, stating, “The defendant had no qualms with shooting his significant other in the back of the head in the presence of three minor children.”
Fuqua was denied bond during a court hearing, and he is scheduled to return to court on April 1, 2026, for further legal proceedings.
The Impact on the Family
The tragic murder has left Sanders’ family in mourning, and the children who witnessed the crime will undoubtedly be deeply affected by the traumatic event. Authorities are working to provide support to the surviving family members during this difficult time.
