A welfare check on May 4 in Houston’s upscale River Oaks neighborhood led to a shocking discovery: four members of the same family had been fatally shot inside their home. The victims include a 4-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl, a 52-year-old man, and a 39-year-old woman.
The Houston Police Department has launched an investigation into the deaths, which are suspected to be the result of a murder-suicide.
Details of the Tragic Incident
At around 5:30 p.m. CT on May 4, officers responded to a call from a babysitter who had been unable to contact the family for 24 hours.
Concerned for their well-being, the babysitter requested a welfare check. Upon arriving at the residence, officers found the four family members unresponsive. The two children were discovered in their beds, already deceased.
Detective L. Brooks, speaking at a news conference after the discovery, expressed the horror of the situation, saying, “This does look like a family matter, but that doesn’t make it any better. It’s terrible… shocking for sure.”
While police have not disclosed further details about the crime scene, including the location of the adults in the home, they have confirmed the tragic nature of the event.
The police department’s preliminary findings indicate that the incident was a murder-suicide, with the male family member suspected of shooting the three victims before turning the weapon on himself.
Victims Identified as Matthew and Thy Mitchell and Their Children
The adults have been identified as Matthew Mitchell and Thy Mitchell, who were well-known in the area for owning the restaurant Traveler’s Table, located nearby their home.
According to reports from the Houston Chronicle and KTRK-TV, the Mitchells’ children, 4-year-old Max and 8-year-old Maya, were also among the victims.
Ly Mai, Thy Mitchell’s sister, confirmed the deaths in an emotional Facebook post on May 5. “We are heartbroken to share that my sister, Thy, and her beloved children, Maya and Max, passed away last night,” she wrote. “Our family is grieving deeply and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult time.”
The River Oaks Neighborhood
The River Oaks neighborhood, where the Mitchell family resided, is one of Houston’s most affluent areas, located approximately five miles east of downtown.
The neighborhood is home to several prominent individuals, including televangelist Joel Osteen, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, and former professional boxer George Foreman. This tragedy has stunned the community, which is known for its high-profile residents and serene atmosphere.
Ongoing Investigation and Call for Information
At present, police have not confirmed the official identities of the victims, as they await verification from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
Authorities have also refrained from releasing additional details about the incident, including the exact cause and manner of death for each individual. An autopsy will be performed to provide clarity.
In the meantime, police are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward. Those with relevant details are asked to contact the Houston Police Department at 713-308-3600.
The deaths of Matthew and Thy Mitchell, along with their young children, Max and Maya, in a quiet, upscale Houston neighborhood have left the community reeling.
The investigation into the murder-suicide is ongoing, and authorities continue to gather evidence to understand the full scope of this tragic event. As the family mourns, the public remains in shock over the senseless loss of life.
