An Arizona man has been sentenced to spend many years in prison after admitting he killed his best friend, cut up the body, and dumped the remains near a desert town.
The case has shocked many people in Arizona because of how brutal the crime was and because the victim and accused were said to be very close friends. The victim, Alijah Bradley, was only 24 years old and had recently graduated from university. His family said he had a bright future ahead of him, which makes the loss even more heartbreaking.
The case and guilty plea
Samuel Bush, 24, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated assault in connection with the death of Alijah Bradley. The plea came late last month. A few days ago, Maricopa County Judge Barbara Spencer sentenced him to 25 years in prison for the murder charge and 15 years for the assault charge.
Court records also show that Bush received another five-year prison sentence for two separate drug-related convictions. These included manufacturing drugs and using a weapon during a drug-related crime. He was also given 542 days of credit for the time he had already spent in jail before the trial.
How Alijah Bradley went missing
The incident happened in Gilbert, Arizona, which is a large suburb around 22 miles southeast of Phoenix. On August 12, 2024, Alijah Bradley disappeared. According to his family, he had celebrated his birthday just one day earlier. He had also recently completed his graduation from Northern Arizona University.
Bradley’s family became deeply worried when he failed to call his mother and wish her good morning, something he used to do every day without fail. After three days passed with no contact, the family officially reported him missing. Investigators later believed that he was likely killed on the very first day he stopped making that daily call.
What investigators found
According to grand jury documents, Bush shot Bradley in the back. After the killing, investigators said Bush bought a reciprocating saw from a home improvement store. He then used that saw to remove Bradley’s limbs and head.
Police said the body was later dumped in a remote area east of Gila Bend, a small desert town about 90 miles southwest of Gilbert. Bradley’s headless body was discovered on August 19, 2024.
The details of the case left the victim’s family in complete shock. One family member said it was hard to understand how someone could do something so cruel and horrifying.
Why the family suspected Bush
Bradley’s family quickly began to suspect Samuel Bush. One relative said Bradley’s mother used the Life360 app to check the last known location of his phone. Even though the phone had been turned off, its final location appeared to be Bush’s apartment.
The family first reached out to Bush directly, but he claimed he did not know anything about Bradley’s disappearance. After that, they contacted Toyota to get GPS information linked to Bradley’s car. That location data was later shared with law enforcement.
A family member described the area where the remains were found as the “middle of nowhere,” showing just how isolated the dumping site was.
A friendship that ended in tragedy
What has made this case even more painful for Bradley’s family is the fact that Bush was not just someone he knew. According to a relative, Bush was Bradley’s best friend.
The family member said Alijah was “Sam’s best friend” and even “Sam’s only friend.” Because of that, many relatives have struggled to understand the motive behind the killing. At this stage, there is still no clear public explanation for why Bush carried out such a violent act.
For the family, the emotional damage is far deeper than the prison sentence. Bradley’s aunt said the punishment does not bring him back and does not truly fix anything. Her words reflect the kind of grief many families feel in such tragic cases. Justice may happen in court, but the pain of losing a loved one remains.
Remembering Alijah Bradley
A GoFundMe page created earlier for funeral and related expenses described Bradley as a bright and loved young man. It said he was known for his free spirit and wild soul, and that his death had deeply affected everyone who knew him.
Bradley was trained as an engineer and had just started building his adult life. His family believed he had a promising future ahead. That is why his death has left such a huge void in the lives of those close to him.
Court process and final sentencing
Bush was first arrested on August 20, 2024, on drug-related charges. A few days later, police connected him to Bradley’s murder. He was formally indicted in September 2024. The charges were later dismissed in April 2025 after a motion from the state.
However, the case did not end there. Bush was re-indicted in January this year on a slightly different and smaller set of charges. He later pleaded guilty, bringing the long legal process to a close.
His sentencing now means he will spend decades in prison. Even so, Bradley’s family has made it clear that no sentence can undo the loss they have suffered. For them, this case is not just about crime and punishment.
It is about a young man whose life ended in a deeply tragic and violent way, just as he was stepping into adulthood. The court’s decision may close the legal chapter, but for the family, the heartbreak will continue for years to come.
