A disturbing interstate domestic violence case has shocked communities in both Maine and New Jersey after former firefighter and EMT Brian J. Lanzim was accused of driving nearly eight hours while armed with guns, body armor, and ammunition to allegedly attack his ex-girlfriend’s family. Prosecutors say what began as a breakup quickly escalated into a dangerous confrontation that ended when police opened fire to stop him.
Former Firefighter Accused of Driving From Maine to New Jersey Armed for Attack
Authorities say 37-year-old Brian Lanzim traveled from Maine to South Toms River on April 29 after his ex-girlfriend ended their relationship.
According to prosecutors, Lanzim was heavily armed during the trip and allegedly intended to harm members of his ex-girlfriend’s family.
Officials say the former firefighter and EMT arrived in New Jersey after an approximately eight-hour drive.
Breakup Allegedly Triggered Threats Against Ex-Girlfriend
Investigators say the conflict began after Lanzim’s ex-girlfriend, a woman from Toms River, ended their relationship during a FaceTime call.
The couple reportedly share two children together.
According to prosecutors, after the breakup Lanzim allegedly made several threatening statements.
Court documents reportedly claim he sent messages including threats toward her and her family.
His ex later sought legal protection by filing for a temporary restraining order.
Prosecutors Say Suspect Was ‘Ready for War’
During a court hearing, prosecutors described Lanzim as being fully prepared for a violent confrontation.
Authorities say he allegedly had:
- Two firearms
- A bulletproof vest
- Multiple loaded magazines
- Additional ammunition stored in his vehicle
Prosecutors stated that he appeared ready for a serious armed conflict.
Investigators believe he may have planned to seriously injure or kill family members.
Police Waited Outside Family Home
After receiving warnings from Lanzim’s ex-girlfriend, local police prepared for his arrival.
Officers from South Toms River Police Department positioned themselves outside her parents’ home on Dover Road.
Authorities say when Lanzim arrived, he drove his vehicle across the front lawn toward the residence.
Police allege he also drove toward officers, forcing them to take cover.
Officer Shoots Suspect During Armed Confrontation
Investigators say Lanzim exited his vehicle and attempted to enter the locked home.
As officers confronted him, one officer reportedly ordered him to drop his weapon.
When Lanzim allegedly refused, police opened fire.
According to reports, he was struck in the pelvis and hand before officers disarmed him.
He was later transported to a hospital for treatment.
Defense Claims Mental Health Crisis
Lanzim’s defense attorney told the court that he was experiencing a severe mental health crisis.
According to court arguments, Lanzim reportedly has bipolar disorder and had been receiving psychiatric treatment while living in Maine.
Defense attorneys claim the breakup and recent personal struggles may have contributed to his behavior.
Former EMT Faces Multiple Serious Charges
Prosecutors have charged Brian Lanzim with numerous offenses, including:
- Attempted murder
- Weapons possession
- Burglary
- Terroristic threats
- Illegal possession of body armor
- Possession of large-capacity ammunition magazines
If convicted, Lanzim could face decades in prison.
The case remains under active investigation.
This shocking case highlights how quickly relationship conflicts can escalate into life-threatening situations when threats are ignored or access to weapons is involved. Authorities say quick action by the victim, who alerted police, may have prevented an even greater tragedy.
As Brian Lanzim now faces multiple serious criminal charges, investigators continue piecing together what prosecutors describe as a carefully armed and potentially deadly mission driven by obsession, anger, and personal crisis.
