A California murder case has reached a major conclusion after a jury ruled that a former financial analyst was legally sane when he brutally killed two young men in Orange County in 2022.
The shocking case involved a planned ambush, dozens of stab wounds, and an attempted insanity defense that ultimately failed. With the jury’s decision now final, the convicted killer is expected to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
California Jury Rejects Insanity Defense
A California jury has found 30-year-old Ramy Fahim legally sane at the time he murdered his colleague and another witness in April 2022. Fahim had previously pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but jurors rejected that claim after reviewing the evidence.
Just one day before trial began, Fahim changed his plea and admitted guilt, meaning the jury only had to decide whether he was mentally responsible for his actions when the killings took place.
Victims Were Young Professionals
Fahim admitted to killing 23-year-old Griffin Cuomo and 23-year-old Jonathan Bahm inside their apartment in Anaheim.
According to prosecutors, Cuomo worked with Fahim at Pence Wealth Management, where workplace tensions had reportedly been growing for months. Prosecutors said Fahim had complained that Cuomo was micromanaging him and assigning work he did not want to do.
Prosecutors Say Attack Was Carefully Planned
Investigators revealed that Fahim waited on the roof of the victims’ apartment complex for hours before carrying out the attack. Security footage and witness statements showed he was seen in the building shortly before the murders.
Prosecutors said Fahim used a hunting dagger and stabbed both victims more than 40 times each. Authorities later found a tarp and shovel inside his car, which prosecutors argued showed planning and an attempt to hide evidence.
Police also discovered notes suggesting Fahim had researched how to use a previous schizophrenia diagnosis as part of a possible legal defense if he were caught.
District Attorney Calls It a Calculated Crime
Todd Spitzer, the Orange County District Attorney, said the killings were not the result of insanity but a carefully planned act of violence. Prosecutors argued Fahim targeted Cuomo, then killed Bahm to eliminate a witness and avoid arrest.
The jury agreed, finding Fahim legally sane at the time of the murders.
Life Sentence Without Parole
Fahim pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, along with special circumstance allegations including lying in wait, multiple murders, and killing to avoid arrest.
Because of the jury’s sanity ruling, Fahim is now expected to receive two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced on May 13.
