Tensions inside Pennsylvania’s Democratic Party are becoming more visible as Governor Josh Shapiro publicly criticised Senator John Fetterman over his recent political positions and voting record.
Shapiro’s comments come at a time when Fetterman is facing growing pressure from both Democrats and Republicans because of his support for parts of President Donald Trump’s agenda.
The disagreement has added more attention to divisions within the Democratic Party ahead of future elections and possible 2028 presidential ambitions.
Josh Shapiro Questions Fetterman’s Direction
During an interview on CNN with journalist Jake Tapper, Shapiro appeared frustrated while discussing Fetterman’s recent actions.
Shapiro said:
“I know that Pennsylvanians voted for a Democrat to represent them in the United States Senate.”
He added that Fetterman should “honor that” and return to reflecting the wishes of Pennsylvania voters.
Shapiro also said:
“Hopefully, get back to what he was elected to do and reflect the will of the people.”
His comments were widely seen as a direct criticism of Fetterman’s growing willingness to work with Republicans and support parts of Trump’s agenda.
Relationship Between Shapiro and Fetterman Has Collapsed
The political tension between the two Pennsylvania Democrats is not new.
In his 2025 book Unfettered, Fetterman revealed that he and Shapiro “no longer speak” to each other.
According to Fetterman, their relationship slowly turned into “ugliness” and never recovered after political disagreements and personal tensions following his Senate election.
The breakdown has become one of the most talked-about rivalries inside Pennsylvania Democratic politics.
Why Democrats Are Frustrated With Fetterman
Fetterman has repeatedly broken with his party on important votes and issues, creating anger among many Democratic leaders and activists.
He is one of only six Democratic senators representing states won by Trump in the 2024 election. Because Pennsylvania remains politically divided, Fetterman has often positioned himself closer to moderate or independent voters.
Some of his controversial actions include:
| Issue or Vote | Fetterman’s Position |
|---|---|
| Department of Homeland Security nominee | Supported Trump-backed nominee Markwayne Mullin |
| Government shutdown fight | Voted with Republicans to reopen government |
| Republican cooperation | Frequently votes across party lines |
| 2025 voting record | Voted with Republicans around 26% of the time |
Fetterman defended some of these decisions by saying he chooses “country over party.”
Shapiro Says Voters Want Answers
Shapiro recently discussed Fetterman again during an appearance on the “Talk Easy” podcast hosted by Sam Fragoso.
Although Shapiro claimed he had “no beef” with Fetterman personally, he said many Pennsylvanians are confused by the senator’s actions.
Shapiro stated:
“John’s got a lot of questions that I think he needs to answer for the people of Pennsylvania.”
He also said many voters are wondering why Fetterman behaves the way he does politically.
Questions About Fetterman’s Political Future
The growing disagreement has created uncertainty about Fetterman’s future inside the Democratic Party.
Earlier this year, Shapiro refused to say whether he would support Fetterman if he seeks re-election in 2028.
When asked about it in February, Shapiro responded:
“I don’t know if he’s running for re-election.”
The comment increased speculation about possible Democratic primary challenges in the future.
At the same time, Shapiro himself is considered a possible Democratic presidential candidate for 2028, which adds another political layer to the rivalry.
Other Democratic Leaders Also Criticise Fetterman
Shapiro is not alone in criticising the senator.
Malcolm Kenyatta attacked Fetterman earlier this year in a post on X.
Kenyatta accused Fetterman of repeatedly attacking his own supporters and Democratic voters online.
He wrote:
“You’re a mess @JohnFetterman.”
The criticism came after Fetterman reportedly described some critics of the Trump administration as suffering from “derangement syndrome.”
Hakeem Jeffries Also Calls Out Fetterman
Hakeem Jeffries also publicly criticised Fetterman.
Jeffries questioned Fetterman’s response to the war involving Iran and said during a CNN interview that the senator “knows better.”
This showed that dissatisfaction with Fetterman is spreading among senior Democratic leaders nationally, not just within Pennsylvania.
Republicans Reportedly Want Fetterman to Switch Parties
The political drama increased further after Politico reported that some Republicans have privately encouraged Fetterman to leave the Democratic Party and become a Republican.
Because Fetterman has supported several Republican-backed positions, some conservatives believe he would fit more comfortably inside the GOP.
However, Fetterman rejected the idea clearly.
In an interview with Politico, he said:
“I’m a Democrat, and I’m staying one.”
That statement appears aimed at calming speculation about a possible party switch.
Fetterman’s Independent Style Creates Debate
Fetterman’s political approach has made him one of the most unusual Democratic senators in Washington.
Supporters say he is independent-minded and willing to work across party lines instead of blindly following political pressure.
Critics inside the Democratic Party argue that he is damaging party unity during a politically sensitive period.
His voting record and public comments continue to divide opinion among both voters and party leaders.
The growing conflict between Josh Shapiro and John Fetterman highlights deeper divisions inside today’s Democratic Party.
While Fetterman presents himself as an independent Democrat willing to support policies from both sides, many party leaders believe he has moved too close to Republicans and Donald Trump’s agenda.
Shapiro’s public criticism, along with attacks from other Democratic figures, shows that frustration with Fetterman is increasing ahead of future elections.
Even though Republicans are reportedly encouraging him to switch parties, Fetterman insists he remains committed to the Democratic Party.
The political tension surrounding him is likely to continue shaping Pennsylvania politics and national Democratic debates in the years ahead.
