‘Didn’t cause that much damage’: The man fled after beating and kicking his 23-month-old son until he was brain dead, claiming he hadn’t done the child “that bad” harm

A tragic and shocking case from California has ended with a life sentence for a father who brutally abused and killed his young son. Ezequiel Ramirez, 28, will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 35 years, after pleading guilty to first-degree murder with the special circumstance of torture in the death of his 23-month-old son, Joziah Ramirez.

Father Sentenced for Brutal Murder

According to the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office, Ramirez also admitted to seven felony counts related to pimping, pandering, and soliciting for prostitution.

Authorities revealed that Ramirez had impregnated Joziah’s mother when she was just 15, while he was around 20 and on parole for robbery and statutory rape. Despite his parole restrictions, he continued contact with the young mother and her child.

Years later, Ramirez allegedly forced Joziah’s mother, now 18, and at least one other woman into prostitution in Tulare and Fresno counties.

Horrific Abuse of a Toddler

During the summer of 2020, Joziah was reportedly abused regularly. His mother told police that Ramirez would lift the toddler by his hair, along with other forms of verbal and physical abuse.

On June 5, 2020, the family was staying at a hotel in Visalia, California. While Joziah’s mother was away, Ramirez allegedly abused the child severely.

Instead of seeking medical help, he messaged the mother to return. She found her son unresponsive, with blood on the bed and around the room. Ramirez claimed he had only kicked Joziah in the stomach and forbade her from calling an ambulance.

Authorities later learned Ramirez tried to cover up the abuse, telling a family friend that the child had fallen down stairs. He deleted messages from the mother’s phone and fled the scene. Later that night, he sent texts like “I’m gone” and “I’ll never see u again” to Joziah’s mother.

Medical Findings and Cause of Death

When emergency services arrived at the hotel, Joziah was rushed to a medical centre and then airlifted to a hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced brain-dead and died on June 9, 2020.

Doctors reported severe and extensive injuries, including:

  • Fractures to both sides of the skull and ribcage
  • Brain swelling and bleeding
  • Bruises, burns, and abrasions on the limbs, torso, and genitals

Authorities confirmed the injuries were consistent with being struck, shaken, thrown, kicked, and burned. The official cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.

Ramirez’s Flight and Capture

After the incident, Ramirez called a friend saying he had been in a car crash. He stayed the night in Fresno, leaving behind a bloodstained duffel bag, and evaded law enforcement for four days while continuing his illegal activities.

He was eventually caught on June 9, 2020. Initially denying his involvement, he later admitted to being present during the abuse but downplayed the severity.

Tulare County District Attorney Tim Ward stated, “The brutality and callousness of the defendant stand in stark contrast to the innocence and vulnerability of this toddler whose body was bloodied, burned, bruised, and broken by the very person who should have been his protector.”

Co-Defendant and Sentencing

Joziah’s mother faced charges as a co-defendant for failing to protect her son. She pleaded guilty to felony child endangerment in 2021 and is scheduled to be sentenced on June 17, 2026, facing a maximum of six years in prison. Authorities described Joziah as a smart and active child who was nearly potty trained at the time of his death.

This heartbreaking case highlights the extreme dangers of child abuse and the importance of protecting children from those who are meant to care for them.
