A Detroit mother is facing multiple criminal charges after police say her young daughter was fatally shot inside a vehicle where several children had been left unattended. Authorities say the tragedy happened after a child found an unsecured firearm in the vehicle.
Detroit Mother Charged After Child Fatally Shot
Tonya Charisse-Annice Johnson, 41, has been charged following the death of her 6-year-old daughter in Detroit. The Detroit Police Department announced the charges on March 6 in a public update.
According to investigators, Johnson left her five children alone inside a van while she went into a nearby restaurant.
Police say the situation turned deadly when one of the children discovered a firearm that had been left unsecured inside the vehicle.
How the Shooting Happened
The incident occurred on March 2 around 12:06 p.m. at a restaurant located on Harper Avenue.
Police responded to reports of a shooting and found the 6-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Emergency responders transported the child to a hospital, but she later died from her injuries.
Investigators later determined that Johnson had left the children alone in a van parked outside the Farmer John Food Center while she went inside to get food.
Police Say Gun Was Left Unsecured
Authorities said the fatal shot was fired by the girl’s 11-year-old brother.
According to police, the boy discovered an unsecured handgun inside the vehicle and accidentally fired it, striking his younger sister.
The identities of the children involved have not been publicly released.
Police emphasized that the tragedy could have been prevented if the weapon had been properly secured.
Charges Filed Against the Mother
Following the investigation, prosecutors filed several charges against Johnson.
She is facing the following counts:
- Firearms safe storage violation
- Three counts of second-degree child abuse
- Four counts of felony firearm
Authorities also reported that investigators found additional unsecured weapons inside Johnson’s home during the investigation.
Officials Say the Tragedy Was Preventable
Detroit police officials and prosecutors described the case as a preventable tragedy.
First Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald stressed the importance of safe firearm storage, noting that laws requiring secure storage exist to protect children from situations like this.
He said the young girl’s death highlights the dangers of leaving guns accessible to children.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy also called the case one of the most serious child safe-storage violations her office has seen.
She said the loss will have lasting emotional consequences for the surviving children who witnessed the incident.
The death of the 6-year-old girl has deeply shaken the Detroit community and raised renewed concerns about firearm safety and supervision of children. Authorities say the tragedy might have been avoided if the weapon had been properly secured and the children had not been left alone in the vehicle.
