Michael Burch, a 76-year-old retiree, shared his frustrations, saying he now pays $80 for just over half a tank of gas—up from $70 previously for nearly three-quarters of a tank. “I’m sick and tired of taxes,” Burch added.

Amid the backlash, Democrats are defending the gas tax increase, framing it as necessary for maintaining the state’s infrastructure.
