On April 16, Fairfax shot and killed his wife, Cerina Fairfax, at their home in Annandale, Virginia. He then took his own life.
At the time of the incident, their two children were inside the house. Their son reportedly called emergency services to report what had happened. Authorities later confirmed that the couple had been going through a difficult and ongoing divorce.
Attorney Speaks After Incident
Following the tragedy, Nancy Erika Smith, who represents Meredith Watson, shared a strong statement.
She said there had been “decades of signs” suggesting troubling behaviour. According to her, more should have been done earlier to respond to complaints and protect women.
She also highlighted the emotional impact on the children, calling the situation deeply heartbreaking.
Past Allegations Against Fairfax
Back in 2019, Justin Fairfax faced serious allegations from two women. Meredith Watson accused him of raping her in 2000 when they were both students at Duke University.
Another woman, Vanessa Tyson, claimed that Fairfax forced her into a sexual act during a political event in 2004.
Fairfax strongly denied both allegations and described them as false and politically motivated. He even filed a defamation case against a news organisation, but the case was later dismissed.
Political Career and Controversy
At one point, Fairfax was seen as a rising political figure and had the potential to become a major leader in Virginia politics. He served as lieutenant governor and remained in office despite calls for his resignation.
He later ran for governor in 2021 but did not succeed and eventually returned to private legal practice.

Before the tragic incident, court filings from his wife revealed serious issues in their marriage. Cerina Fairfax had accused him of:
