A heartbreaking mass shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego has left the local Muslim community in shock after three people were killed during an attack authorities are investigating as a hate crime. Among the victims was Amin Abdullah, a father of eight and security guard who is now being remembered as a hero for helping protect worshippers and children during the deadly incident.
Father of Eight Remembered as Hero After San Diego Mosque Shooting
Amin Abdullah was identified as one of the three victims killed during the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on May 18.
Community members, family, and city officials have praised Abdullah for his bravery during the attack.
His daughter, Hawaa Abdullah, described him as a loving father and role model during an emotional press conference.
“He was a best friend. He was the best, absolute best dad in the world,” she said.
She also shared that her father always made sure his family felt safe and cared for.
Police Say Security Guard Helped Save Lives
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl praised Abdullah’s actions during the attack and said the security guard likely helped prevent even more deaths.
According to police, Abdullah helped keep the violence contained near the front area of the mosque.
Wahl stated:
“At this point, I think it’s fair to say his actions were heroic.”
Authorities believe the actions of the victims and staff members helped protect around 140 children who were inside the Islamic center at the time of the shooting.
Children at Mosque Escaped Harm
Community member Sam Hamideh described Abdullah as a “martyr” who cared deeply about protecting children and the local Muslim community.
According to reports, the children inside the center were not physically harmed during the attack.
Friends and community members remembered Abdullah as someone who greeted everyone warmly and made people feel welcome at the mosque.
Teachers and students also described him as a respected and loved figure within the Islamic center.

CAIR San Diego confirmed the identities of the other two victims killed during the shooting:
| Victim | Details |

A fundraiser launched to support the victims’ families has already raised millions of dollars from supporters worldwide.
Police Investigating Shooting as Hate Crime
Authorities said the shooting happened around noon at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Eckstrom Avenue.
Police later confirmed the threat had been neutralized.
Investigators believe hate-related language and extremist rhetoric may have played a role in the attack.
The FBI is now assisting in the investigation alongside local police.
Teen Suspects Found Dead
According to law enforcement officials, the two teenage suspects were later found dead inside a nearby vehicle from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Police also revealed that one suspect’s mother had earlier reported concerns that her son was suicidal and that weapons and a vehicle were missing from the home.
Authorities said one suspect was reportedly dressed in camouflage clothing during the attack.
Attack Happened During Holy Islamic Month
The shooting occurred during Dhul Hijjah, one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar.
The timing of the attack has deeply affected many members of the Muslim community in San Diego and across the United States.
Community leaders continue calling for unity, peace, and stronger protection against hate crimes targeting religious groups.
