A tragic case in Oklahoma has ended with a guilty plea, after a father admitted to actions that led to the death of his teenage daughter in a devastating crash.
Oklahoma father pleads guilty in fatal crash case
A 43-year-old man, Elliott Lincoln Binney, has pleaded guilty in connection with a deadly rollover crash that killed his 16-year-old daughter. The case was handled in Tulsa, where court records confirm he accepted responsibility for multiple serious charges.
Charges and plea agreement details
Binney pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, child neglect, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and transporting an open container. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped an additional reckless driving charge. They are recommending a sentence of two to five years in prison followed by five years of probation.
Crash details and tragic outcome
The incident took place on January 11, 2024, near East 171st Street South, where emergency responders from the Bixby Police Department arrived at the scene of a serious rollover crash. Authorities found that Binney’s daughter, Shelby Binney, had been ejected from the vehicle during the crash and later died from her injuries.
Inside the vehicle, Binney’s wife and two other children were found injured and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Reckless driving and alcohol involved
Investigators said the crash happened while Binney was driving dangerously in poor weather conditions. Witnesses reported that he was speeding, attempting to pass other vehicles, and crossing into a no-passing zone on a wet road before losing control.
An open bottle of vodka was found at the scene, and Binney admitted to police that he had taken a “gulp” of alcohol just before the crash. Prosecutors stated that his reckless behaviour caused the vehicle to flip, leading to the fatal outcome.
Father fled scene after crash
One of the most shocking parts of the case is that Binney did not stay at the scene. According to authorities, he ran away on foot before first responders arrived. He later obtained another vehicle from a nearby location and fled the area.
He was eventually located and arrested in Checotah, around 50 miles away from the crash site.
Prosecutors describe case as tragic
Steve Kunzweiler, the Tulsa County District Attorney, described the case as deeply tragic. He emphasised that such actions, especially involving one’s own family, cannot be ignored and must be addressed through the legal system.
Awaiting sentencing
Binney, who had previously been out on bond, has now been taken into custody following his guilty plea. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 8, where the court will decide his final punishment.
This heartbreaking case highlights the serious consequences of reckless driving and driving under the influence, especially when it puts loved ones at risk.
The loss of a young life has left a lasting impact, and the legal outcome serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible behaviour on the road. As the case moves toward sentencing, it stands as a warning about how quickly dangerous decisions can lead to irreversible tragedy.
