A Romanian immigrant who was released early from prison for s**ually abusing a middle‑school boy is now facing possible deportation after being taken back into custody on an alleged probation violation, federal and local authorities say.
Who Is Rebecca Fratila‑Ilies?
Rebecca Fratila‑Ilies is a lawful permanent resident of the United States who was convicted in Virginia on two counts of carnal knowledge of a child and statutory rape following her December 2022 arrest, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These crimes involved the s**ual abuse of a middle‑school aged boy.
Despite being sentenced to a long prison term — reportedly a decade — Fratila‑Ilies was released early from a Staunton, Virginia prison. After her release, she relocated to North Carolina.
Arrest for Probation Violation and ICE Action
On March 25, 2025, authorities with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina took Fratila‑Ilies into custody for an alleged probation violation. Details about the nature of that violation have not been publicly disclosed. After her arrest, the sheriff’s office notified ICE.
In mid‑April, ICE placed an immigration detainer on Fratila‑Ilies, urging local authorities to keep her in custody while immigration proceedings unfold. ICE officials say they are prepared to deport her once an immigration judge issues an order.
Immigration Status and Deportation Proceedings
Although Fratila‑Ilies arrived in the United States as a child and received her green card in 2006, federal authorities later discovered that her asylum claim was fraudulent because it was filed by her mother. This invalidated her permanent resident status and exposed her to deportation.
An immigration judge initially ordered her deported in absentia in 2017. However, she successfully appealed that decision and secured relief from removal in 2022, before she was convicted of the s*x crimes.
Now, ICE says her convictions for s**ually abusing a child make her removable under U.S. immigration law.
ICE Director Todd Lyons said in a statement that supporting her removal is appropriate given the severity of her crimes, and that ICE is “standing by to deport her once a Department of Justice immigration judge’s order is issued.”
Current Situation
Fratila‑Ilies remains in police custody while her probation violation case continues. If a judge finds that she violated her probation, it could affect both her criminal sentence and immigration proceedings. Following that, ICE aims to pursue her deportation from the United States.
