A disturbing crime from Illinois has left many shocked, as a man is accused of killing his own mother and hiding her body in a secret area of her home. What makes the case even more troubling is the effort allegedly taken to hide the crime for several days.
Elderly Woman Found Dead in Basement
A 66-year-old man, Kevan Works, has been arrested in Chicago after police discovered the body of his 88-year-old mother, Daniest Graves, inside her home.
According to the Chicago Police Department, Graves’ body was found on April 7 in the basement of her house. She had been wrapped in a rug and hidden inside a blocked room. Prosecutors revealed that the entrance to the room was covered by a bookcase, making it difficult to find.
Victim Missing for Several Days
Authorities believe that Daniest Graves was last seen alive on March 26. Concern grew when her sister tried to visit her on March 28 but was not allowed inside the house by Works.
This raised suspicion, and the situation was later reported to the police. When officers investigated, they uncovered the horrifying scene in the basement.
Details of the Crime Scene
Prosecutors shared shocking details about how the body was found. Graves’ remains were:
- Wrapped in a rug
- Partially covered with black garbage bags
- Secured with duct tape
Reports also revealed that she had suffered multiple injuries, including several knife wounds.
Inside the house, police recovered several items that may be linked to the crime, including:
- A folding knife
- A hammer
- Brass knuckles
- A bowie knife
- Bleach
These findings suggest that the crime may have been violent and planned.
Suspicious Behaviour Raises Questions
Kevan Works had been living with his mother since Thanksgiving. When questioned by police, he claimed that he had not seen her since March 27.
However, his actions raised doubts. Preventing family members from entering the house and the condition in which the body was found added to the suspicion.
Investigators also found Graves’ purse and wallet in a garbage can in the garage. Additionally, a jewellery box was discovered with its contents cleaned and neatly arranged.
Possible Motive Under Investigation
During the court hearing, the judge suggested that the crime might have been committed for financial gain. While the exact motive is still under investigation, the evidence found at the scene points towards possible planning.
The judge also made a strong statement, questioning how someone could commit such an act against their own mother.

Kevan Works is now facing serious charges, including:
- First-degree murder
- Concealing the death of a person
He was arrested on April 7 and is currently in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 29.
