Authorities in Illinois have arrested a man in connection with the fatal shooting of an 18‑year‑old college freshman near Loyola University Chicago’s campus. The arrest follows a deadly incident that shocked the local community and drew national attention.
What Happened in the Shooting
On Thursday, March 19, 2026, Sheridan Gorman, an 18‑year‑old freshman at Loyola University Chicago, was walking with friends near campus in the Rogers Park area when a masked man suddenly approached the group and fired a gun. Gorman was struck in the head and died at the scene. Police described the shooting as random.
Arrest of Jose Medina
The Chicago Police Department announced that Jose Medina, 25, was arrested a day after the shooting. He has been charged with first‑degree murder and first‑degree attempted murder in connection with the death of Gorman. Medina is also facing additional gun‑related charges.
Officials say Medina was taken into custody on Friday, March 20, 2026, not long after surveillance footage and witness accounts helped identify him. A handgun believed to be used in the shooting was found inside his home.
