A frightening incident in Mesa has shocked many people after a simple road accident turned into a brutal attack. What started as a minor car crash quickly became a life-threatening situation for an innocent woman.
Minor Accident Turns Violent
Police say a woman pulled over after a small car collision to exchange details with the other driver, identified as Joseph Sellers. Instead of resolving the issue peacefully, the man allegedly attacked her without any clear reason.
The incident took place on February 20 near a Burger King parking lot, where the victim was later found badly injured.
Details of the Brutal Attack
According to court documents, the victim suffered serious injuries, including:
- A collapsed lung
- 19 stab wounds on her face, neck, and torso
- Severe bleeding and visible disfigurement
- A broken tooth
Police described the attack as extremely violent, with the woman found “brutally beaten” and covered in blood when officers arrived.
What the Accused Told Police
Investigators say Sellers admitted that he became angry after the collision. He also claimed he believed he was being “gang stalked,” which made him suspicious of the victim.
When the woman reached into her purse, he assumed she might be carrying a weapon, as Arizona allows open carry. However, he later admitted it was likely she was just trying to get her information.
Despite this, he attacked her, punching her repeatedly and then stabbing her. He also confessed that he intended to harm her.
Victim’s Condition and Quick Thinking
Even after the attack, the victim tried to call for help but realised her phone had been taken by the attacker. Thankfully, she used her smartwatch to contact the police.
She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors treated her for her serious injuries.
Arrest and Investigation
After the attack, Sellers fled the state and was later found in Las Vegas. Police say he was still driving the same vehicle but had changed its appearance by painting the rims.
Authorities also recovered the victim’s phone from him. During a search of his vehicle, officers found box cutters that matched the injuries caused to the victim.
He was taken back to Arizona and is now facing multiple serious charges.
Charges and Court Hearing
Sellers has been charged with:
- Attempted second-degree murder
- Armed robbery
- Burglary
He is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on April 2.
