ANADARKO, Okla. — A woman charged in the death of 4-year-old Athena Brownfield was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty on Wednesday. Alysia Adams had previously waived her right to a trial on February 26, 2026.
Following her guilty plea, a Caddo County judge sentenced Adams to life imprisonment on one count of second-degree murder and one count of child neglect.
Adams was also found guilty of assault on an officer. The charges arose from the death of Athena, a young girl from Cyril, Oklahoma, who was under the care of Adams and her husband, Ivon Adams, when she went missing.
Athena was reported missing in January 2023 after a mail carrier discovered her sister. Law enforcement, along with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, launched a search that ended when Athena’s remains were found in rural Grady County, buried in a shallow grave inside a backpack.
An autopsy by the state medical examiner revealed that Athena weighed 23 pounds at the time of her death. The autopsy listed her cause of death as acute pneumonia complicating malnutrition, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Ivon Adams faces charges of first-degree murder and child neglect, with his arraignment scheduled for June 17. Karma Tucker, formerly known as Jasmin Brownfield and Athena’s biological mother, faces two counts of child neglect for leaving Athena and her sister in the care of the Adams. A hearing in her case is scheduled for August 12.
During the sentencing, multiple victim impact statements were read aloud. One was delivered by Addyson Camp, who adopted Athena’s sister, Adina, reading a statement on behalf of the 8-year-old. Camp said, “I am very sad the way Alysia treated us. Other kids are treated way better. I am adopted and am thankful I have someone who loves me. My mother should have been Athena’s mother, too.” Camp also addressed the court personally, stating, “We are struggling to raise our newborn child and care for Adina, who is struggling with the loss of her sister and the horrifying memories of living with Alysia and Ivon.”
Adams also spoke during the sentencing, expressing remorse. She said, “I am sorry for my actions, and I am taking responsibility for them. I regret my decisions. I have grown closer to God, which is helping me become a better person. I hope the family can forgive me one day.”
