A heartbreaking case from New York City has reached a major legal conclusion after a man was sentenced for the brutal killing of a woman found inside her own apartment. The crime shocked many due to its disturbing details and the tragic circumstances surrounding the victim.
Man Sentenced for Brutal Murder in New York
Halley Tejada has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. The sentencing took place in Manhattan Supreme Court following his guilty plea in December 2025.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office confirmed the punishment, stating that the sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime. Although prosecutors had asked for a longer sentence of 25 years to life, the court decided on a slightly lesser term.
Victim Found in Shocking Condition
The victim, Nadia Vitels, was 52 years old and had just begun a new phase in her life. She was moving into a new apartment in the Kips Bay area of Manhattan when the tragic incident happened.
Her body was discovered on March 14, 2024, by her own son. He found her inside a duffel bag placed in a closet, which made the situation even more disturbing.
What Happened Inside the Apartment
According to investigators, Tejada was not alone. Another suspect, Kensly Alston, is also accused in the case.
Prosecutors said that the two had been illegally staying inside Vitels’ apartment while she was in the process of moving. When she returned with her belongings and her dog, they were still inside.
Authorities believe that the two attacked her, leading to her death. After the crime, they allegedly hid her body inside a bag and placed it in a closet to avoid detection.
Escape and Use of Victim’s Belongings
After the murder, the accused reportedly fled to Pennsylvania using Vitels’ car. They also used her credit cards to make several purchases.
Reports mention that they bought items such as:
- Electronics like a gaming console and earphones
- Clothes and food
- A diamond ring
These actions added more charges to the case, including robbery and misuse of stolen property.
Legal Status of Co-Accused
While Tejada has pleaded guilty and received his sentence, the case against Kensly Alston is still ongoing.
Alston has pleaded not guilty, and the court will continue to hear evidence before making a final decision in that part of the case.
Statement from Authorities
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. expressed sympathy for the victim’s family. He said that while no punishment can bring Vitels back, the sentence may offer some level of closure to her loved ones.
He also described the crime as brutal and deeply disturbing.
